Unbelievable Update: Republican Jenkins Said she Accidently Signed a Resolution Supporting a PARDON for Jack Johnson of "Great White Hope Fame"

Republican Rep. Jenkins sent a Resolution urging President Obama to grant a pardon to boxer Jack Johnson of "Great White Hope" fame. Claims it was an accident. She said she didn't read it before she signed it!
ABC10 reports:
Tuesday, September 1, 2009
A spokeswoman for Kansas' 2nd District Rep. Lynn Jenkins said the congresswoman didn't read a resolution she supported urging a pardon for boxer Jack Johnson. The resolution urging President Barack Obama to pardon Johnson contained the phrase "great white hope." Jenkins, a Republican, caused a stir when she used the phrase during a gathering in August in Kansas.

The phrase "great white hope" often is associated with pre-civil rights-era racism. It is widely believed to have become popular in the U.S. when Johnson, who was black, captured the heavyweight title in the early 1900s.
Many whites reacted to Johnson's achievement by trying to find white fighters -- or a "great white hope" -- who could beat him.

I find it interesting that it took so long for him to get a pardon, considering how many times it was brought up in the past.

Even more interesting is who got the bill going this time:

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Johnson_(boxer)#Prison_sentence

There have been recurring proposals to grant Johnson a posthumous Presidential pardon. A bill requesting President George W. Bush to pardon Johnson in 2008, passed the House, but a companion bill, sponsored by John McCain, failed to pass in the Senate.[9] In April 2009 McCain, along with Representative Peter King, filmmaker Ken Burns and Johnson's great niece, Linda Haywood, requested a presidential pardon for Johnson from President Barack Obama.[10] On July 30, 2009 the Jack Johnson Resolution passed urging Barack Obama to give Johnson a Full Pardon. Just like the Patriot Act perhaps?

Very few of our elected representatives read things before voting or signing.

Some of us have realized that can be advantageous, if one is seeking to actually improve the country- even if it unpopular later.

I don't know why. After all, look at all the Dems who signed on to the Health Care Reform bill in the House without reading it. This is standard practice in Congress as we saw the last two years with the immigration reform bills.

This was a 1-2 page resolution, not a thousand page document. The HealthCare Bill is being read and summarized by staff for review as all tenured and educated members of congress know and understand. However given what occurred with the passage of the Patriot Act, many conscientious lawmakers are ensuring to read each page.

But reading with an open mind vs reading it with a preconceived negative blocked mind are two different things.
