On Immigration
The biggest split in America today isn’t over social issues like abortion or gay marriage. It’s not even over the war in Iraq, or taxes. The biggest divide is over immigration.
The biggest split in America today isn’t over social issues like abortion or gay marriage. It’s not even over the war in Iraq, or taxes. The biggest divide is over immigration.
Demagogues on the right and left are telling Americans our jobs are threatened, our social services overwhelmed, and their streets unsafe because of immigrants. Fear and prejudice are on the rise. According to a recent Pew survey, more than half of Hispanic adults in America today worry they or someone close to them could face deportation. Earlier this year, when Congress tried to enact a bipartisan bill that would better secure the borders and also try to regularize the plight of undocumented immigrants – giving them a path to become regular citizens and avoid the constant fear of deportation – the bill was killed by these agents of fear and intolerance.
Well, I have some news for those fear-mongers. If they think this country or this economy can succeed in coming decades without tens of millions of additional immigrants, they’re not thinking straight. The huge baby boom generation – 77 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 – will be retiring, and there aren’t nearly enough native-born Americans after them to keep this economy going, let alone keep money flowing into the boomers’ Social Security and Medicare trust funds. The graying of America means we need this new wave of immigrants.
Remember also that most of us born here are descended from immigrants. What we’ve learned is that people with the guts and gumption to leave their country of birth and come to America are almost by definition ambitious. And we also know something else: The single most important asset of this economy and society is ambition. I’m not arguing that we throw our borders open. No, we need better border security. But to think immigrants are our enemies, or to believe that they’re taking more out of the economy more than they putting into it, is pure baloney.
At this time of year especially, we need to remind ourselves of the tolerance and generosity that built this country by allowing our immigrant ancestors to become full-fledged Americans.
Robert Reich is the nation's 22nd Secretary of Labor and a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
Geez, it's about our immigration laws for crying out loud! Who the hell cares or should care about anything else about this issue? Excuses and insults is all the pro's have. Think about that for once and stop the bleeding heart rhetoric and whining.
ReplyDeleteimmigration laws dee, what don't you understand? we are not against legal immigrants, we are against illegal aliens. they should return to their countries and we will let them know how many we need. When we figure that out, they can be back here within ONE day, everyone knows that.
ReplyDeleteanon1
At this time of year especially, we need to remind ourselves of the tolerance and generosity that built this country by allowing our immigrant ancestors to become full-fledged Americans.
ReplyDeleteI thought my immigrant ancestors had already became full fledged Americans.
Anon1,
ReplyDeleteThis article (as I noted) is taken verbatim from Robert Reich´s blog.
Most leading economists DO NOT advocate the Mass Deportation of 12 - 20M people. They know this would devastate our economy!
That wouldn't be true if the SAVE ACT is passed because it will take 4 years to eliminate illegal aliens from the employer's payrolls. That will give them time to replace them with American workers.
ReplyDeleteThe econmists are only concerned about the economy, duh. They are not taking into account the costs of illegal immigration, our laws or morality. They speak with only the economy in mind and that is because.....they are economists.
The economists are not concerned about massive population growth either and the ensuing costs and negatives down the line with that. Each body in this country represents money aka the economy to them.
ReplyDeleteThey are much like you, dee. You use the economy as an excuse for your own personal agenda and their only concern is the economy and money. And like them you have tunnel vision for the future. A massive economy requires a massive population. Not good in the long run.
ReplyDeleteWhat is being advocated by the ANTI's is Enforcement through Attrition. It is/has been shown to work, look to AZ and OK, soon to be TN.
ReplyDeleteThis from your neck of the woods, Dee.
From the Dallas Morning News:
The state-funded University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston might soon have to curtail some potentially life-saving services, such as cancer treatment, because it can't cope financially with an overload of illegal-immigrant patients. Similarly at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and numerous other county-funded medical facilities, budgets are at the breaking point, largely because of demand from illegal immigrants and other uninsured patients.
The federal government is supposed to pick up much of the tab, as it should, since illegal immigration is Washington's problem. But Texas' share of federal funds for immigrants' hospital care, $47 million last year, covered only a fraction of the expenses. State and county taxpayers wind up paying the rest.
Doctors are in an increasingly precarious position. They must honor their oath to heal the sick as best they can without discrimination. Yet public hospitals are taxpayer funded, and when too much money goes to care for people with no legal right to be in this country, doctors and hospital administrators feel pressure to draw the line.
They've tried to curtail non-emergency care for illegal immigrants but have quickly faced threats from advocacy groups that they'll start sending them directly to emergency rooms, where by law no one can be turned away. Doctors are being turned into de facto immigration-enforcement agents, which clearly is not their job.
.....
•72 percent of Dallas' immigrants are from Mexico. The national average is 28 percent.
•82 percent of births at Parkland Hospital are Hispanic, and 40 percent of their parents are illegal immigrants.
•Unreimbursed state Medicaid expenditures for illegal immigrants in 2000: $18.1 million; in 2005: $38.7 million. That's an increase of 114.3 percent.

Good find, liquid. Let's see how dee tries to squirm out of this one.
ReplyDelete"The biggest divide is over immigration."
ReplyDeleteReich is the demagogue here by belittling this divide and by attributing it to fear and prejudice rather than to the rule of law and the government's failure to enforce the law. Everyone, not just those on one side of the divide, should be concerned about the latter.
The Pew survey results are probably severely biased by what those surveyed think is the answer that will be in their best interests, not what they really feel. In other words, Hispanics have an incentive to exaggerate their worries in hopes that the results will generate sympathy in some quarters, as they have with Reich.
To put this in perspective we need to know what fraction of the total number of illegals is actually deported each year and how this compares with the number of new illegals arriving each year. I suspect that the number arriving vastly exceeds that actual number of deportees each year and as a consequence the total number of illegals in this country continues to grow and therefore there is no rational basis for fear of deportation because of the low probability of that happening.
If Hispanics were real Americans, they would feel like those on the other side of the divide, that the important thing here is the rule of law, support of our immigration laws, our national interest (including theirs), and our national sovereignty. It is easy to see why many lump Hispanic illegals with Hispanic citizens because they seem to have the same agenda.
The real test for congress is the SAVE bill. Reich wants to hold border security hostage to the regularization (amnesty or mass legalization) of illegal aliens. He betrays his sentiments by using such euphemisms as "...regularize the plight of undocumented immigrants...". Actually their plight is already regularized, they are after all regularized illegals.
He wants a pathway to citizenship knowing full well that this would undercut any border security improvements. For border security, to work we have to do just the opposite: (1) If you come here illegally, you will never be able to attain citizenship, and (2) if we catch you, you will be involuntarily and expeditiously deported without recourse. If one is an advocate of secure borders, it's time to recognize that (1) and (2) are an essential part of that advocacy.
The bill was killed by ordinary Americans by calling them "... agents of fear and intolerance...fear mongers...not thinking straight" Reich clearly steps over the line into gross insults. He deserves to be tarred and feathered.
As a practitioner of the dismal science of economics, he should understand the need to make the adjustment now rather than later in our economy so that we can achieve a soft landing with a stable population.
He's not thinking straight and not thinking beyond the end of his nose if he does not consider what America will be like 50 or 100 years from now if the policies he proposes were to be put into effect.
Reich is clearly an advocate of a population-driven economy. This is totally inconsistent with the idea of secure borders. If we need tens of millions of new immigrants, why not throw open the borders and invite in all the impoverished people from all over the world until America looks like Bangladesh?
Instead of advocating a population driven economy, Reich should be making positive proposals on how our economy can adapt to our aging population without destroying the foundations of our republic.
It's true that many of us are the children of immigrants or of first generation citizens. As such,no claim can be made that we, the children, have the guts, gumption and ambition that drove our immigrant ancestors to these shores. In fact, even in the case of those ancestors, guts, gumption and ambition may have had little to do with it. Having no food in the belly during the Irish potato famine or continued war and poverty in the homeland were more likely the driving force behind the mass immigrations of the past.
Reich presents no evidence that "...they’re taking more out of the economy more than they putting into it, is pure baloney." Various studies have shown to the contrary. The situation in Dallas cited in the Liquid's post is just one example. Reich clearly doesn't know what he is talking about. His baloney is probably from some $50,000-$100,000 speaking engagement.
Anyone who breaks the laws is clearly an enemy of civilized society. Governments that allow this, on both sides of the borders, are even worse and the heads of such governments should be impeached. Reich's brand of baloney won't sell in little communities across American that are being overrun with foreigners who speak no English and whose cultural practices are inconsistent with the American ideals.
Reich is a neoliberal imbecile.
ReplyDeleteAccording to a recent Pew survey, more than half of Hispanic adults in America today worry they or someone close to them could face deportation.
Lumping together foreigners and natives in a single category is dishonest. Most likely the native half does not fear deportation while the foreign half does.
If they think this country or this economy can succeed in coming decades without tens of millions of additional immigrants, they’re not thinking straight.
The US will not "succeed" (meaning, the GDP will grow) even with millions of immigrants. The millions who are now in the US have not diminished the negative impact of US overconsumption, negative savings, credit crunch, and currency debasement. Like Blanche DuBois, the US is dependent on the kindness of strangers, namely, east Asian and Arab central banks.
I wonder what Reich has to say about the fire sale in which Citi Group, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley have sold their assets to foreign states, the collapse of the dollar, and the national debt? Does he think the economic structure that is collapsing before our eyes will stabilize by granting citizenship to foreign workers? I fail to see the connection.
Hmmmm Pat,
ReplyDeleteI see Professor R has stirred your ire.
In your angry responses, you have stated what I have stated for some time but which Liquid and Ultima disagree. You believe the “SAVE ACT is passed because it will take 4 years to eliminate illegal aliens” – eg 4 years for Mass Deportation. That is the intent of the so called SAVE Act and it will be devastating to the American Economy.
Thank you for proving my point for me!
Liquid,
ReplyDeleteThis Editorial is interesting, but as I have posted several times, there are thousands of for profit hospitals in Dallas and Park is the one County Hospital that feels the brunt of those without insurance. The same goes for the County hospital in Houston.
Also, this Editorial should be careful. It mixes in Hispanic citizen stats with illegal immigrants, as if there is a connection. Of course there is a high rate of Hispanics in Texas. It is a minority majority state.
Many economists agree, the benefits outweigh the costs. The highest cost is Education, but then we do want Assimilation. The 2nd highest is healthcare, primarily felt by the County Hospitals.
What we need is CIR. That way the $18B Sales Tax Revenues (etc.) TX earns each year can help offset these costs.
Interesting. I read the comments of Reich's blog and nobody agrees with him except Dee, who prefaced her adoration with her usual "I am the daughter of poor migrants... the American Dream... yada, yada yada."
ReplyDeleteUlty, Robert Reich is not a demagogue. If you call him this, you have to use capital letters for ANTIs like Tanton, Beck, Dobbs, Buchanan, etc. etc. ad nauseum!
ReplyDeleteLupita,
ReplyDeleteRobert Reich is my Hero!
(go ahead girl. have at me!)
BTW Lupita,
ReplyDeleteI posted a picture of you and Ulty on my blog.

Who is that guy? Marlon Brando?
ReplyDeleteBefore drawing conclusions it is wise to examine the (implicit) assumptions. In this case the key assumption is that our economy needs to keep growing and if the existing population becomes less productive (because of age) then we will need to import young workers.
ReplyDeleteWhy does our economy need to keep growing? Because our economic model is based upon a capitalist model of growth. The stock market assumes this as well. Not only do companies have to grow, but if they are to be favored in the market they have to grow at a continually accelerating rate. This is, of course, a mathematical impossibility.
When one of these firms hits a natural limit it is punished by the market.
Why can't we picture an economy which is steady-state and not dependent on growth? We could even consider one which is contracting. As the population ages their need for consumer items diminishes and this goes hand in hand with the decline in the work force.
The inability of economists to look at any other models besides "free market" capitalism is why the world is heading off a cliff.
How about a bit of thinking outside the box? -- Feinman
"That is the intent of the so called SAVE Act"
ReplyDeleteThe intent of the SAVE act is to secure the borders. It is one of several bills with this intent that has been criticized by those who profess to support secure borders. We know by their opposition that they are not serious. They know being for secure borders is not enough to accomplish anything so it costs them nothing to take this position. When it comes to doing all the things necessary for border security, internally, externally and at the border, then they demur, hesitate and delay. We know you!
No. He is Gregory Peck. The movie "A Duel in the Sun" a great movie! You should rent it!

Ulty, Your chastisement of All Hispanic Americans, just because they may not agree with your opinions, was not only unfair but a downright Lie. We Hispanic Americans believe in Truth, Justice and the American Way! We believe in Comprehensive Immigration Reform. We may not agree with your side but we do not say you are NOT Americans. Shame on you!
ReplyDeleteUlty´s Statement:
“If Hispanics were REAL Americans, they would feel like those on the other side of the divide”
Ulty´s Quote: “Why does our economy need to keep growing?”
ReplyDeleteAre you asking every American to be content with their current salary and station in life? To not want to purchase new technology, toys, cars, etc? To not ever buy a new home? Not send their children to college?
Dee says:
ReplyDeleteAre you asking every American to be content with their current salary and station in life? To not want to purchase new technology, toys, cars, etc? To not ever buy a new home? Not send their children to college?
This would be achievable with higher wages for the employees, however we can not have that with the exploitation and usage of 1. slave labor (illegal immigrants in the work force), 2. more employees then needed (illegal immigrants in the work force). With the over abundance of employees, the employer has the advantage (employer pockets the profit, while the employees wages stagnate or decrease), with less employees, the employee has the advantage (wages increase for the worker, thus allowing more spending money and the ability to purchase more products).
Dee is confusing higher GDP and acquiring stuff (on credit if necessary) with increased quality of life.
ReplyDeleteDee has everything confused!! ;-}~
ReplyDeleteHardly confusing anything, just putting Ulty´s statement in Human, day to day Terms with real life examples.
ReplyDeleteLiquid,
ReplyDeleteHigher Wages are achievable with the Mass Deportation of 12M people, a Depresession-Recession Businesses out of Business? Hardly likely!
Liquid,
ReplyDeleteTry taking one of these and a large glass of Holiday Cheer!
The only businesses that are going out of business or decrying, are those that 1. cater to the 'Illegal Immigrant's' themselves, 2. Companies/Corporations that believe in large profits and CEO extravagant bonuses. Those that compete on the world economy LOVE cheap labor (employees in the USA paid the same in retrospect of those of third world countries, i.e. India, China, and the likes), it makes there product more global, thus more profit.
ReplyDeleteYour hero Reich is forecasting a recession even without the deportation of foreign workers. And he hardly sees them in human terms, just as the means for the aging, overconsuming population (like an admirer of his) to be able to cash their Social Security checks. What mass emigration is doing to families and communities in Mexico, he cares not. The impact of this policy on the American low class, he does not mention. He might as well be talking about animals with no need for pensions for themselves or social needs whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteWhy not give some examples of the human, day to day experiences of the victims of the system, such as the native alienated, inner city youth and the voiceless foreign peasants?
Lupita,
ReplyDeleteI am first an American. I love my country. Second, my heritage is from Mexico. I love my heritage. Third, I come from Poverty and learned from my father that Family, Christian Values, hard work, truth, honesty and treating others as you was to be treated is vital in order to succeed as a Human Being.
I agree with Robert that a recession is inevitable. We both think of all people in Human terms.
When I think of day to day examples, I know we have drug issues in America. If we were to have a War, it should be a War on Poverty, a War on Drugs – especially the use of Meth.
My mother lives in Southside SA, this is the “Mexican” section of town. There is a little community not far from where she lives. They call it “Little Mexico.” It is said that the illegal immigrants live there. It is a very poor section of the southside. It is said people from Central America and South Mexico are the majority.
They come from the poorest of the poor in their own countries. They risked their lives to come here. They work from morning until night to scrape by and to send their children to school so they have a better life. But do you want to know something? There is little to no drug use in this section.
The police do not patrol this area. Instead, they patrol the West side. Why? Because that is where the drug use and crime is most prolific. That is where the scary events happen. Many of those on the West side are not new immigrants. No. They are the assimilated, American drug users of every ethnicity.
If I were to have a wish, I would wish we would spend all of our time and energy in eliminating drug use, not only in America but across all countries. The USA, Britain and Australia are among the highest Drug USERS in the world. We need to END drug use. That is the war we should be fighting.
You want to end the use of all drugs, by your own espousal, yet not just a few posts before you gave me a chill pill, which in fact is a drug. Are you then contributing to the use of drugs, while at the same time claiming to want to have a war on drugs? Sounds just like your claims of wanting a secure border, but only after the "illegals" have been given amnesty (CIR).
ReplyDeleteWidespread drug consumption is a symptom of social decay and alienation, not its cause. Another symptom is addiction to consumption. Your masters will not take away the drugs from the lower class anymore than they will take away your technology, toys, McMansions, and SUVs.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, your masters play their geopolitical chess games to which they are addicted while all, poor and bourgeois, cheer on.
Legalizing illegals, or not legalizing them, will do nothing to stop the decadent downward spiral in which the US is immersed.
What point did I prove for you, dee? I don't understand what you mean.
ReplyDeleteWhat I said is that it would take 4 years to eliminate illegals off the employer's payrolls. I didn't say anthing about mass deportation. It is only your opinion that this would devastate our economy. Employers will have up to 4 years to replace the illegal workers with American workers. Now just what point did I prove for you? I am puzzled.
Liquid gave a breakdown of the percentage of illegals giving birth at Parkland. That of course would not include citizen births, Hispanic or otherwise.
ReplyDeleteCounty hospitals are still tax payer funded, dee. And that means you and I pay for them.
Is that all you will believe is some economist's opinions? What about that Congressional Budget report that disagrees that illegals are a net benefit to our society? Does that mean nothing to you?
No we do not want illegals assimilating into our society and providing them with an education to do so. They don't belong in this country and should be deported, period!
"we do not say you are NOT Americans. " Of course, you don't because you would have no basis for doing so since we are in favor of the rule of law, enforcement of our immigration laws, prosecution of those who usurp others' SSN and identities, the national interest and sovereignty, the English language, American (gringo) culture, flag, constitution and are opposed to anything or anyone who threatens them.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to agree with me, just with the things listed above and the tools, staffing, rules, and infrastructure to make them happen.
I'm just saying how it appears to those who are in favor of the above as opposed to those who are not.
ReplyDeleteYour comments about drug use have nothing to do with the illegal immigration issue, dee. We have many wars to fight in this country and it isn't just the war on drugs. Illegal immigration is devastating our society too.
ReplyDeleteI don't care that they risked their lives to come here. It was their own choice. A bank robber risks his life to gain his ill gotten booty too. This is about the law! You either come here legally or stay out. If they are so courageous risking their lives to come here then why don't they have the same courage to stay in their own countries and fix them?
It does nor take much courage to work illegally in the US. Americans are most welcoming. We readily get tourist visas at any American embassy, fly in, get fake papers on any street corner, and get jobs no questions asked. We also get free education and health care, credit cards, mortgages, driver licenses, Spanish-language TV and radio and Para español, marque el 1. And if anybody wants to change the de facto rules, we declare a national strike and go out and march with the help of the American Chamber of Commerce, the American Catholic Church, governors, and mayors.
ReplyDeleteWhat have you Gringos who are against illegal immigration and so courageous done? Post on blogs? Fax your Senator? Grumble and whine?
More than you will ever know! We don't want to give away our game plan.
ReplyDeleteI know! You will vote for Huckabee!
ReplyDeleteNow that takes courage!
Are you kidding, I hate Huckabee!
ReplyDeleteLOL Liquid,
ReplyDeleteMay our drug problems be All VIRTUAL pills like the Chill Pill I sent you!
Most of the ANTIs hate Huckabee. What do they call him? The Huckster? Schmuckabee? They hate the fact Gilchrist who they now call a traitor, endorsed him. It is all a huge, huge soap opera on their blogs.
ReplyDeleteMy next Political Soap Opera blog will be coming out soon.
BTW, MSNBC just said not of the RNC candidates currently running will be the 2008 Prez candidate.
I am thinking W is planning on submitting his brother´s name soon. Hmmmm........
Since Huckabee said that a fence should be built along the Mexican border to keep out disgruntled Pakistanis after Bhutto's assassination, I though that would endear him to many deluded Americans who see foreign workers as a cause, and not a symptom, of economic meltdown. He does seen stupid enough to have a large following. Who is this crowd rallying for then?
ReplyDeleteAnd who is the Reich-Dee faction cheering for? Not that it matters, mind you. All candidates believe that the US is destined to rule the planet, so nothing can go wrong.
(Snigger)
Who am I for? I lean towards Hillary, Obama or Edwards. Even Gore. Anyone other than GOP!!
ReplyDeleteOf the GOP, the only one I can tolerate is McCain, but they hate him and he will never be the candidate.
ReplyDelete"What have you Gringos who are against illegal immigration and so courageous done? Post on blogs? Fax your Senator? Grumble and whine?"
ReplyDeleteWhat do you suggest? It would be nice to mount a 2 million person march on Washington.
Otherwise, querida, you are absolutely correct.
"It does nor take much courage to work illegally in the US."
ReplyDeleteYou are right again, Lupita. All this talk about fear of deportation and bringing people out of the shadows is just fear-mongering on the one hand and an effort to create a pathway to citizenship on the other. The probability of being apprehended and deported, I suspect, is very low.
You point out a major flaw in our immigration laws. "We readily get tourist visas at any American embassy, fly in, get fake papers on any street corner, and get jobs no questions asked." How does an illegal alien qualify for permanent residency and citizenship? With fake papers? What law is it that permits such a person to gain permanent residency?
Dee -
ReplyDeletea while back you posted that you used to work picking crops - or perhaps some hard working member of your family was picking crops.
Agriculture workers are needed by our society.
But can you tell us more about this - what hourly wage was paid
dee, you have a strange idea of what a soap opera is. Soap operas are made up fake stories. There is nothing made up about the Huckabee/ Gilchrist story. But then you do love melo-dramatics, don't you? Especially anything to do with the ant's you like to dramatize and exaggerate.
ReplyDeleteHow does an illegal alien qualify for permanent residency and citizenship?
ReplyDeleteWait it out until the next amnesty. They come every 10-15 years.
That's the problem!
ReplyDeletePat,
ReplyDeleteYou don´t find the whole melodrama surrounding Huckabee, Gilchrist, William and other ANTI cohorts flying out to Iowa to rally against "the Huckster" similar to a Soap Opera?
Nope! It is real life.
ReplyDeletePat,
ReplyDeleteOh. I get it.
Bet you wouldn't be getting so worked up over any pro-politician's so-called soap opera.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any of us in here are voting for Huckabee anyway. I know I'm not. So flame away and enjoy your "drama". You always do.
Speaking of one of your little dramas. How did that accusation of Rund being a MM come out? Silence is golden, hey dee?
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting for her "ADMITTED APOLOGY" she stated she was going to publicly make.
ReplyDeleteDon't hold your breath, liquid.
ReplyDeleteLiquid, Pat,
ReplyDeleteThey changed Rund´s court date to mid January.
Please keep up.
dee, no need for a snide remark. Neither myself or liquid knew about the new court date. I am sure you will keep us updated unless of course no proof comes out about Rund being a MM. Then I expect you will keep quiet about it.
ReplyDeleteLupita,
ReplyDeleteDuel in the Sun is on Turner Movie Classics (TCM) this Sunday at 11:30 am ET.
Seen it many times. I know why you like it.
ReplyDeleteI like the movie for a number of reasons.
ReplyDeleteFirst, (as I note in my book) I have loved movies since I was a little girl. We used to always walk to the movies on Saturdays. The old theatres used to show double and triple features for 50 cents a ticket.
Second, I love movie classics, even today. I love stars like Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotton in this movie. Gregory Peck played a different role in this movie than most of his movies. He was very handsome, swaggering, wild and somewhat bad. (just like Ulty says he was when he was young).
Third, the movie itself was a classic, produced by David O Selznick who also produced Gone with the Wind. It was one of those movies that took up the entire screen and each actor was larger than life. It was one of those movies you just got inside of when you watched it. Also, there was such chemistry and raw passion between Gregory Peck and Jennifer Jones. You just didn´t see that kind of passion in movies in those days. Being a woman, I have always loved a good love story and this was a good one. Jennifer Jones was so sultry in it, like raw sensuality. (Lupita and Ulty in another Universe?)
The only thing about it was the ending. It kind of went over the top, but it was still good.
Other old time love stories I loved when I was a little girl were:
ReplyDelete. Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn)
. Splendor in the Grass (Natalie Wood)
. This Property is Condemned (Natalie Wood, Robt Redford)
. Marjorie Morningstar (NW)
. West Side Story (NW)
. Gypsy (NW)
. Diary of Anne Frank
I could go on and on.
I like old movies too but I know why you like this particular one. It is about a Mexican or native indian woman living among anglos. It's a raza thing.
ReplyDeleteYou know, when I look at my movie favorites, I do notice one thing. In each of my favorites, there was an innocent young girl who had smoldering passionate emotions just underneath the surface, who was looking for true love. (I know, corny)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a young girl, my Dad was very overprotective and did not allow any of his daughters to date while we lived under his roof. He was trying to protect us. I was a good girl and obeyed but when I was young, I always thought he was too strict.
Pat, Her mother was a Native American. You are very silly in your assumptions.
ReplyDeleteWhat is silly about my assumptions? Since her mother was native indian so would the young star of the movie be. You relate to the movie because of that. If I remember correctly it dealt with discrimination too of which you always feel the victim of yourself. That is mostly the reason you liked that movie. You are relating to it.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable Pat.
ReplyDeleteYou act as if people are 1 dimensional.
As I said, there were many, many reasons why I like this and many movies. Read what I said.
dee, why don't you just admit it. You mostly relate to the movie on a personal level and that is the "MAIN" reason that you liked it. You feel the role of the native indian star mirrors you. I never said that might be the only reason you liked it. Why do you keep fighting it? It's no big deal.
ReplyDeletePat, Women are complex. We think. We use our minds. I already explained why I love classic movies! There are many reasons.
ReplyDeleteKeep being in denial dee for whatever reason you have. I made an accurate observation about why you "mosty" like that particular movie and you feel you have to keep defending yourself for some strange reason.
ReplyDeleteYour mosty opinion is your own dear!
ReplyDeleteLOL. Thank you for giving me a good laugh for this afternoon!
You make me laugh every day in here dee, not just one afternoon. Your views are bizzaro to say the least. One has to laugh to keep from crying.
ReplyDeleteAnd deep down Pat, I know you like me and my blog. I like you too even though you are the way you are. I hope you keep coming back!!
ReplyDeleteI dislike what you stand for, dee and that is the displacement of Americans in their own country by illegal foreigners.
ReplyDeletePat, Are you a retiree?
ReplyDelete
