SAN DIEGO – Presidential candidate Barack Obama will travel to San Diego next month to join opponent John McCain in speaking at the annual convention of the National Council of La Raza, the nation's largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization. Both senators are expected to address immigration and other issues pertinent to Latino voters, NCLR President Janet Murguía said during a visit to San Diego promoting the convention. Obama's plans were announced yesterday; McCain had agreed earlier to address the convention.
The fact that both candidates will attend “speaks to a number of things, not only to the importance of the Latino vote, but also to the importance of this region and this state,” Murguía said during a news conference. Afterward, Murguía said she expects a historic turnout of Latino voters in November, many to counter what they see as anti-immigrant political rhetoric, but also drawn by issues such as the foreclosure crisis and health care. On the immigration front, both senators have supported changes that immigrant advocates see as favorable. McCain once championed a temporary worker program but has since shied away from that stance. “Senator McCain will be in an interesting position,” Murguía said yesterday, regarding his appearance at the convention. “I think people will be interested to see where he still is on immigration.”
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the convention July 12-15 at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees will range from community leaders and elected officials, including speakers such as San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, to members of corporations, philanthropies and academic institutions.

  1. I will be looking forward to seeing what the NCLR defines as comprehensive immigration reform, including the specific benefits package they want and also if there are any calls for restriction of news commentary, etc.

  2. The major news organizations are NOT reporting on this. Only in the San Diego & LA papers. Very curious.

Also, I don´t see anything on the ANTI blogs about this either.

    All very curious.

  3. dianne, I think the NCLR has already made their position pretty clear. They want most of the illegals here legalized and put on a path to citizenship.

I doubt that they will bring up restricting freedom of speech to two presidential candidates because they would only make themselves look foolish and anti-American. Although we do know that is what they want.

I don't see the issues that face Latinos as being any different than non-Latinos. Afterall we are all Americans. I know the candidates are pandering for votes but what we have here is two presidential candidates having to promise rewards for immigration law breakers who also mostly happen to be Latinos? It makes me question the morality and patriotism of both the candidates and the ethnic group they are pandering to.

When push comes to shove however, regardless of which one wins the election, they will have to honor the will of the majority of Americans. The NCLR and like minded groups and individuals are only fooling themselves if they think otherwise.

  4. Patriot, my point is I want to see comprehensive immigration reform specifically defined when it comes to the path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Remember all the little details that became big deals when the last CIR bill was debated in the senate. What exactly does NCLR want when it comes to paying back taxes? For how many years, to what extent, etc." What exactly does NCLR want when it comes to entitlement benefits and when in the process of applying for citizenship do they want these benefits to start? What does NCLR want when it comes to including extended families in the citizenship process? That's what I'm talking about. I want NCLR to state what they want and I want to see how the candidates respond.

  5. travel, while I disgree with putting these illegal aliens on a path to citizenship or anything remotely like that, you do bring up many good questions about what exactly does the NCLR expect from any CIR. The devil is certainly in the details, so to speak.

I wouldn't count on either of the candidates being truthful in any of their responses to the NCLR's questions. It is all about votes right now and then they change their tune once in office.

  6. Travel,

The NCLR views re: Immigration are well documented on their website.

    NCLR on Immigration:
NCLR conducts immigration policy analyses and advocacy activities in its role as a civil rights organization. The primary focus of these activities is to encourage immigration policies that are fair and nondiscriminatory, to encourage family reunification, and to enact necessary reforms to the current immigration system.

Here is their link with further details on their CIR view.

  7. If the NCLR seeks fair and undiscrimantory immmigration policy, then I am sure they won't mind if we deport many of the Mexican and other Latino illegals and replace them with legal immigrants from non-Latino countries so that it all equals out. Snicker, snicker.

  8. Snicker?
Why do you focus on Latinos??

    All very telling Pat!

  9. I just want the same "fair and undiscrimanatory" immigration policies that the NCLR claims it does. In order to have that we have to even the playing field by not allowing in more immigrants from one ethnic group or nationality than another, right?

If the NCLR and other advocacy groups or individuals don't agree with that fair practice, then it is THEY that are focusing on Latinos, not me.

  10. I think NCLR states its mission clearly:

    NCLR on Immigration:
NCLR conducts immigration policy analyses and advocacy activities in its role as a civil rights organization. The primary focus of these activities is to encourage immigration policies that are fair and nondiscriminatory, to encourage family reunification, and to enact necessary reforms to the current immigration system.

  11. Isn't this a repeat? I already dissected their "fair and nondiscrimanatory" claim for our immigration policies.

  13. Anon1,
You are right. We sure dont want McCain´s 100 more years in Iraq!!

  14. Both Obama and McCain would be a disaster to this country and for different reasons.

  15. The Immigration issues aside, I think we ALL agree McCain´s promise of 100 more years of war in Iraq excludes him as a choice for most voting Americans.

  16. You take McCains 100 years out of context and fail to see that Obama would have us in Afghanistan instead, for how long, is the question. We will have an occupancy in the middle east for a good long while no mater which becomes the next President.

  17. How does anyone take McCain´s own words out of context when it is on video on YouTube:

During a town hall meeting in Derry, New Hampshire in January, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told a crowd of roughly two hundred people that it “would be fine with” him if the U.S. military stayed in Iraq for “a hundred years“:

Q: President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for 50 years — (cut off by McCain)

    McCAIN: Make it a hundred.

Q: Is that … (cut off)

McCAIN: We’ve been in South Korea … we’ve been in Japan for 60 years. We’ve been in South Korea 50 years or so. That would be fine with me. As long as Americans …

    Q: [tries to say something]

McCAIN: As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed. That’s fine with me, I hope that would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where Al Queada is training and equipping and recruiting and motivating people every single day.

  18. Here is McCain saying it himself on youtube:

  19. The 100 years are going to be an occupation, just like we are still in Germany, Japan, Korea, etc...

    ReplyDelete
  20. We, Americans, will not STAND FOR 100 more years in Iraq! An unjust war!!

No more Dead Sons and Daughters in Iraq!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Do you plan on bringing th troops located in Korea, Germany, Italy, Azores, etc... home as well? Since those areas are still occupied by our forces, which is what will happen with Iraq and Afghanistan as well. Your lack of knowledge in the Armed Services is an outrage, didn't you say you have family members in the military? Ask them, they should tell you the same thing as I have said.

  22. Occupation is different than AT WAR! as in Iraq.

The American Public will NOT STAND for 100 more years of War in Iraq!

  23. Every day, McCain sounds more and more like GW and his statement "Mission Accomplished!"

  24. Watch this MSNBC clip. About 2 1/2 minutes

    the question asked:
what does he mean by 100 years?
how will he end the war?

mccain´s spokesman cannot answer the question either.

Pretty much IT in a nutshell!

McCain = 100 more years of War in Iraq!!!

  25. Hang on for both commercials in the link above. The clip is about 6 or 7 minutes. About 2 1/2 minutes into it, McCains spokesperson cannot answer the 100 year war question.

There are a couple of good commercials in this clip.
I like the mother son commercial.
The John Cusack commercial at the end is GREAT!!
