Congressman Gutierrez: Postville, a Political Ploy by the Bush Administration!

Now that the PRO Blogosphere has made Postville front page news, Congressman Luis Gutierrez says the Bush Administration used Postville and Agriprocessors as a political ploy.
The DesMoines Register reports:
Postville raid a political ploy
By TONY LEYS • tleys@dmreg.com • July 26, 2008
Postville, Ia. – The Bush administration tried to score political points by ordering unusually harsh penalties for hundreds of undocumented workers swept up in an immigration raid here, Illinois congressman said Saturday.“I think they’re kowtowing to the most xenophobic, anti-immigrant heart and base of the Republican Party because there’s an election coming up,” Rep. Luis Gutierrez said. The Chicago Democrat made the allegation in an interview after an emotional meeting with about 100 people at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. He said top White House officials actually favor reforming immigration laws to make it easier for workers to come here, but they ordered the May raid so it would look like they were cracking down.

  1. Nothing but a propaganda opinion piece. What were the unually harsh penalities for those illegal aliens? I know of none.

Since the Bush Administration will soon be out of the picture, why would they be trying to score political points with the raids? What has xenophobia got to do with it and who is anti-immigrant? Lies, lies and more lies!

Since McCain ( the Replublican) is busy hispandering for the Hispanic vote by promising CIR isn't that directly in conflict with a so-called political agenda to impress law abiding Americans with the raids? And then he goes on to say that top "White House" officials favor reforming immigration laws. He says one thing in one sentence and then turns around and implies something else in another sentence. He is just another pro-illegal symph journalist doing their usual double talk and spreading lies.

  2. Guitierrez was speaking before the hearings going on now in Congress investigating the raids. ICE raids are being conducted across the country due to ICEs Operation Streamline. They have been targetting workers all year long, janitors, meat packing, restaurants. No employers imprisoned but many workplace sweeps all to appease the GOP ANTIs so they dont make too much of a stir before the election.

  3. That is a lie, dee. I have already posted several links to stories whereby the employers were fined and/or imprisoned and you know it!

So you think that the current Republican Administration and McCain talking out of both sides of their mouths aka conducting raids and then turning around and pandering to Hispanics about putting thru CIR is making a hit with Republican citizens? We want honesty from both candidates, not doing one thing for one group (raids) and then turning around and promising something else to another group (CIR). The raids don't mean squat if in the end most of these illegals are given amnesty/legalization. Just how stupid do they think we are? We can see right thru them!

  4. Pat, I am referencing the corporate owners facing prison time, not lower level supervisor getting charged or some mom and pop mexican restaurant. I am talking owners like Rubashkin or Swift of Pilgrims Pride or any large corporation that has consistently solicited, hired and abused workers for years. NONE have spent one day in prison.

  5. Perhaps the guilty weren't all at the top level. Did that ever occur to you? Wasn't it McDonalds that just recently got fined one million dollars?

  6. Pat, No. That was the franchise for a couple of restaurants.

  7. A franchise yes, but with an owner of those franchises, ahhhh. Again for a Corp. or an Inc. who is actually the owner? They are self owned entities. Who are you going to arrest, the company itself?

  8. If found guilty, he will be arrested. You don't exactly have the patience of St. Jude, do you?

  9. Unless they can prove Rabushkin was directly involved he will never be tried eventhough he may have begun the company, he, however, only makes a profit off the companies profit margin as an ex-CEO. Now, do some research Dee, there have been a few new accusations come up in the case about the company Executives. I'll let you find the article and post it, though.

  10. Ive read it Liquid. I read Failed Messiah almost every day. Also, I liked the way you spelled Rubashkin. Reminds me of Jewish kin to the Prez. Nice play on words.

  11. I couldn't have said it better myself, Patriot! I hope every illegal person that is caught is prosecuted to the full extent of the law before they are deported.

  12. I am absolutely appalled that this Congressman would state that Obama's election was a MANDATE for amnesty! I live in Arizona and we have seen the economic impact of illegals on all fronts: medical, welfare, education, AND employment opportunities. Furthermore, over FIVE million home foreclosures were from illegals. We need E-verify nationally and we to send these illegals home immediately...anyone who thinks we can support the entire continent of South America with limited resources is insane!

    Look at this report:

Employers cut 533K jobs in Nov - most in 34 years
    By JEANNINE AVERSA

    December 5, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Skittish employers slashed 533,000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years, catapulting the unemployment rate to 6.7 percent, dramatic proof the country is careening deeper into recession.

The new figures, released by the Labor Department Friday, showed the crucial employment market deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid clip, and handed Americans some more grim news right before the holidays.

As companies throttled back hiring, the unemployment rate bolted from 6.5 percent in October to 6.7 percent last month, a 15-year high.

Job losses were widespread, hitting factories, construction companies, financial firms, retailers, leisure and hospitality, and others industries. The few places where gains were logged included the government, education and health services.

The loss of 533,000 payroll jobs was much deeper than the 320,000 job cuts economists were forecasting. The rise in the unemployment rate, however, wasn't as steep as the 6.8 percent rate they were expecting. Taken together, though, the employment picture was dismal.

The job reductions were the most since a whopping 602,000 positions were slashed in December 1974, when the country was in a severe recession.

Job losses in September and October also turned out to be much worse. Employers cut 403,000 jobs in September, versus 284,000 previously estimated. Another 320,000 were chopped in October, compared with an initial estimate of 240,000.

Employers are slashing costs to the bone as they try to cope with sagging appetites from customers in the U.S. and in other countries, which are struggling with their own economic troubles.

The carnage - including the worst financial crisis since the 1930s - is hitting a wide range of companies.

In recent days, household names like AT&T Inc., DuPont, JPMorgan Chase & Co., as well as jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., and mining company Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. announced layoffs.

Fighting for their survival, the chiefs of Chrysler LLC, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. will return Friday to Capitol Hill to again ask lawmakers for as much as $34 billion in emergency aid.

And to conclude, I am not anti-Hispanic OR a racist! My one and only husband was Hispanic but a proud American who fought for his country during Vietnam! I would demand a stop to such an invasion from ANYwhere in the world. Citizens must start demanding this illegal invasion be stopped by passing laws that prevent illegals from jobs, benefits, and education.
