Breaking News: House votes to Chastise Rep. Wilson over outburst
Minutes ago, the House of Representatives voted to admonish Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) for HECKLING President Obama when he violated the rules of Congress as he yelled "You Lie" to our President during his healthcare address to Congress last week.
"Wilson made the institution look bad," said Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.). Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) added: "You can't substitute a personal apology for a public offense." Wilson has refused to provide a meaningfully apologize before Congress and only apologized to Rahm Emmanuel (not the President) because leaders in his party twisted his arm.
A number of Democratic lawmakers contended that Wilson's outburst had been a breach of decorum and that he had brought "discredit to the House" when he accused Obama of lying when the president asserted that his healthcare overhaul would not benefit illegal immigrants. The 238-178 vote for a resolution of House disapproval of Wilson's act was cast largely along party lines. However, seven Republicans voted in favor of the Censure.
Wilson has a history of racism. He is a confederate flag segregationists, supporting the Confederate Flag flying over his state's capital. Wilson's insolence and contempt towards our President warranted this Rebuke. It appears, however, that Wilson sees glory in this. Wilson continues to twitter he is not going to apologize. Meanwhile he reaps the rewards for his breach of decorum with the number of contributions from his extreme racist right wing teabaggers in his party.
In the meantime, his wife continues to ask her husband, "Who was "the nut" who shouted "You Lie!"
Even though the vote was largely partisan, there were a few departures from party loyalty. Seven Republicans voted to rebuke Wilson: Rep. Joseph Cao of Louisiana, Jo Ann Emerson of Missouri, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Walter Jones of North Carolina, Tom Petri of Wisconsin, Dana Rohrabacher of California and fellow South Carolinian Bob Inglis.
ReplyDeleteserves him right, my opinion is this is a slap on the wrist
ReplyDeleteFormer President Jimmy Carter says Congressman Joe Wilson's outburst to President Barack Obama last week was an act "based on racism." Carter called Wilson's comment "dastardly" and part of an "inherent feeling" held by some in this country who feel that a black man should not be president.
ReplyDeleteNew York Times columnist Maureen Dowd found Rep. Joe "You lie" Wilson's heckling of Obama to be racially motivated. And a Congressional Black Caucus member fears the revival of America's worst days of race hatred.
ReplyDelete"I guess we'll probably have folks putting on white hoods and white uniforms again and riding through the countryside, intimidating people," Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said when asked if Wilson's comment reflected the sentiment of racists. "And you know that's the logical conclusion if this kind of attitude is not rebuked."
ReplyDeleteRep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said: "Some Americans have not gotten over the fact that Obama is president of the United States. They go to sleep wondering, 'How did this happen?'"
ReplyDeleteGee, all Democrats making those claims. Go figure! Please provide an URL where former president Carter said that Wilson't outburst was racially motivated. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteATLANTA (AP) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst to President Barack Obama during a speech to Congress last week was an act "based on racism" and rooted in fears of a black president.
ReplyDelete"I think it's based on racism," Carter said at a town hall held at his presidential center in Atlanta. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."
The Georgia Democrat said the outburst was a part of a disturbing trend directed at the president that has included demonstrators equating Obama to Nazi leaders.
"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," he said. "It's deeper than that."

Joe Wilson's action is not only "dastardly" but also bastardly motivated.
ReplyDeleteThose one hundred plus Republicans that voted in favor of Joe Wilson are in solidarity with Bastard and Scoundrel Behaviour.
Think of this : each time that the President of the USA speaks to a joint session of Congress, then a group of scoundrels can yell and shout whatever obscenities and bastardies. Will that be the behaviour for the Future ??
It is a better idea to condemn this Filth and Dirt of Republican Bullies. I have heard few voices of condemnation coming from that Party.
Joe Wilson was presented as a Hero in Fox News. I immediately changed the station.
I don't like scoundrels as heros.
And Yes !! ,... .. all those Republican votes for Joe Wilson inside the House of Representatives are sheer Hyperdistilled Racism.

Even if one does not agree with the President, the outburst was so disrespectful, so the rebuke was a good decision.
ReplyDeleteJoe deserved to be admonished but we shouldn't let that get in the way of understanding that he was correct regarding illegal aliens as so many writers and commenters has shown.
ReplyDeleteFrom the White House to Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Democrats raced to distance themselves from the former President Jimmy Carters' claim that racism was behind Rep. Joe Wilson's "You lie" outburst and other attacks on President Barack Obama.
ReplyDeleteCarter said Tuesday that there's "an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president," and that that feeling drives some of the anti-Obama dissent.
Jimmy Carter is 84 years old and three decades removed from the White House, but he still has the power to make Democrats run.
Away from him, that is.
