Justice Sotomayor introduces "Undocumented Immigrant" into the Supreme Court's Vocabulary!

Justice Sonia Sotomayor is already making a difference! She is introducing Humanitarian Language to the Supreme Court's Vocabulary! Thank you Justice Sotomayor!

Think Progress Reports:
Sotomayor’s opinion marks the Supreme Court’s first use of the term ‘undocumented immigrant.’

Yesterday, the Supreme Court “released its first four decisions in argued cases this term,” including one marking Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s debut. The case concerned “whether federal trial-court rulings concerning the lawyer-client privilege may be appealed right away,” to which Sotomayor said no. The New York Times notes one particularly noteworthy part of Sotomayor’s opinion:

In an otherwise dry opinion, Justice Sotomayor did introduce one new and
politically charged term into the Supreme Court lexicon.
Justice Sotomayor’s
opinion in the case, Mohawk Industries v. Carpenter, No. 08-678, marked the
first use of the term “undocumented immigrant,”
according to a legal database.
The term “illegal immigrant” has appeared in
a dozen decisions.

  1. I think that Sonia Sotomayor is a person of Strength - She is not a meek lamb.

She had a sharp retort from Justice Clarence Thomas and a tete a tete confrontation.

Thanks to you for the Most Wonderful and Opportune Informations.

Dee is not a Meek Lamb but a Brave Lioness.

  2. I wondered how long before this racist Hispanc would try to make a mockery of our immigration laws in favor of her own ethnic kind by trying to soften the illegal acts of her amigos by using all warm and fuzzy terms for them. Illegal alien is the proper term for those in our country illegally and there is nothing inhumane about that term. Sotomayer once again shows her ethnocentric racism just like she did before she became a SCJ.

  3. Anon,
Say what you will. Illegal Alien has NOT been used by the Supreme Court in previous documents.

  4. Undocumented immigrant equals illegal immigrant. It may sound better to an illegal alien's ears but the person in question is still ILLEGAL. Being that this is a fact, it is a shame that a U.S. judge(involved in legal issues)is trying to take out the word illegal and replace it with undoumented. Maybe being hispanic, she is now showing what a lot of people feared, that she would have bias for one race of people, her own.

  6. Sotomayor understands that words have meanings and control perceptions. You change the words, say it long enough, people start to change their perceptions.

By removing the word illegal and replacing it with undocumented, you take away the criminal component and replace it with something akin to a paperwork issue, which can be remedied with a stroke of a pen, as opposed to deportation.

    This is la raza 101!

  7. your actions may be illegal but you can not be illegal.
Do we call criminals "illegal criminals" because their actions are illegal?

  8. Yes, you can be illegally in a country. Illegal can be used as and adjective not just as a noun. In the case of the term "illegal alien" alien is being used as an adjective to describe someone's status in a country. What's the objection to alien then? Alien also means foreigner not just some little green man from mars.

There is no need to put "illegal" in front of the word criminals. It would be an oxymoron. Anything illegal is criminal already.

  9. Looks like you all gringos forgot that your grandparents or great-grandparents were immigrants
    legal or illegal.
Anonymous you are the only racist calling Sotomayor "Hispanc", do you think you are better or superior?
    HAHAHAHAHAHA
And by the way you idiot, her last name is Sotomayor not Sotomayer...Soto-Goldwyn-Mayer? HAHAHAHA And "Hispanic" is not a "race" you ignorant (what is more than common in this country)

  10. Another one...
"Anything illegal is criminal already". This is not an oxymoron, this is stupid. Law and morals are not necessary the same thing.
You are an oxi(dized)moron, like the rest of oxymorons here
