Rep Gutierrez at Large Chicago Immigration Rally: "2010 - The Year for Immigration Reform!" Jesse Jackson invokes memory of MLK at Rally!

With zeal befitting a church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once preached, Rep. Luis Gutierrez told 1,200 people jammed into First Baptist Congregational Church on the West Side on Saturday that America can no longer put meaningful immigration reform on hold. Gutierrez -- pushing his own immigration reform bill -- said Latinos didn't turn out in droves to support then-Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama only to see his administration "be the administration that's deported more people than the last administration."

And while Obama has come under fire for trying to tackle too many issues at one time, Gutierrez told the supportive crowd: "This is the year we're going to get it done!"

Saturday's rally, entitled Full Citizenship and Full Employment for Full Equality, featured Chicago area lawmakers as well as union and religious leaders -- all calling for major changes in immigration law. By some estimates, there are 12 million people living illegally in the United States. Gutierrez says his immigration bill "keeps people working, but understands the needs of our economy. It gives a pathway to citizenship, but understands that immigrants must learn English, pay taxes and contribute to their communities."

The Rev. Jesse Jackson invoked the memory of King -- whose birthday is being commemorated Monday -- in calling for a change in immigration policy. "His fight was about immigration reform," Jackson said. "It was about one set of rules" for all people. And Jackson, like several others who spoke, highlighted the plight of the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake there.
Too often, Jackson said, would-be Haitian immigrants are unfairly turned away from U.S. shores. "We should play by one set of rules, whether you're from Cuba, Haiti or Mexico,"
Jackson said.

Gutierrez also took a swipe at his own faith, saying the Roman Catholic Church should stand up for immigration reform the way it fights against abortion. "My church is a church that should watch every action of unfairness and injustice that has occurred in the Congress of the United States, and not just one or two that they decide to choose," he said.

  1. Dee, thanks for your opportune informations on Immigration. This is beautiful, good luck but this is going to take a lot of time, sweat and some tears.

Obama was effective stumping for Martha Coakley in Boston, on Sunday.
I watched the speech on Fox News.
It was the right decision of Mr Obama, to work for Coakley, He needs to project Strength, Decision, Leadership, and that is exactly what he did this afternoon.
Even if Coakley loses, Obama wins in public Image. A president doesn't need to win in all districts or elections. But nobody is going to say that Obama is Lazy, Indifferent, egoist, careless, not hard working and not caring for Projects, Bills and Ideas ( Health Care, etc... )

Obama used one of his best strengths : Oratory ( which is part of Poetry, Literature and ART )and I am very sure that Coakley is going to improve in polls.

People may dislike Obama's Policies but nobody should be so mean as to deny the intelligence and stamina of the President.

  2. Hispanics still trying to ride on the coat tails of the Civil Rights Movement even though there is no comparison. Idiot Black leaders still going along with this crapola.

  3. Wrong Pete.

Latinos and African Americans and many minorities and unions have been partners in the civil rights since the 60's. We are Continuing our Partnerships with the Immigration Reform movement. This is the Civil Rights Movement all over again!

  4. How is this the Civil Rights Movement all over again when we are talking about the abused rights of Black Americans vs illegal alieins? There is not comparison. Quit insulting Black people with this garbage.

  5. Right Dee, Beautiful Paragraph !( in your comment )

There are Wonderful White People that are excellent friends of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Polynesians, Native Americans and many other Minorities.

This is not a Race War like that projected by Charles Manson in his "Helter Skelter" scheme in which he was provoking a Racial War between Blacks and Whites in order that the New Prophet or reincarnation of Jesus ( Charles Manson ) was going to rule the World, using American Power.

The "Helter Skelter" of killing Whites was a plot to enrage Whites against Blacks, so that Whites started to kill Blacks.

So everybody can march in a Civil Rights March, no matter the color or his or her skin, no matter the form of the Facial Features or Body Characteristics.

  6. Martin Luther King's activities revolved around civil rights, not immigration issues.

Jessie Jackson makes a living off of fomenting racial disharmony.

I believe Representative Gutierrez to be a racist with a Brown Ethnic Nationalistic agenda.

Racism is racism, no matter the color of the racist.

We might have some happy investors, but - where are the jobs?

Oh, there's a health care bill to fight over without sufficiently employed taxpayers to fund it.

And, rather than genuinely finding a way to create jobs without federal funding (that pesky lack of employed taxpayers again) somehow we need to turn people who arrived without benefit of legal entry into citizens.

    The madness of it all.

It makes "Alice in Wonderland" look like a documentary.

  7. Pete,
Your opinions are not the truth. Merely your opinion.

The reality is, Latinos and African Americans have been partners since the Civil Rights movement and we continue to be partners. Study the history. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, the NAACP, President Obama have long supported CIR. CIR not only supports improvement over our broken immigration policies, it also promotes equal rights and equality for all.

  8. Ilbegone,
Racism is still alive in the US. We see it by the likes of Glenn Beck, his 9/12 Teabaggers, the KKK, White Nationalists and others of their ilk.

  9. The leaders in the Black community are all race hustlers and just want to continue in the limelight.
No way do they represent the Black community as whole.

Illegals do not have equal rights in this country nor should they. So this isn't about civil rights.

  10. We also see the reconquista groups, the NCLR, Lulac, Mecha and they are all race based groups also. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

The only difference between those groups and the groups you mentioned is that they hide under the cloak of all kinds of so-called civil rights for Hispanics. It's baloney and you know it. You are just blinded by your own biased views not to see that they are all one and the same.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Pete,
NCLR, like the NAACP are Humanitarian groups. There is no mass movement called reconquista. Only bias and racist groups like the KKK and Minutemen and Malkin supporters believe that. Shameful!

Those that come here do NOT want to make this country Mexico. They come here seeking the American Dream and to become Citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  12. No, they cloak themselves as humanitarian groups. They are actually raced based organizations just like the KKK. You just refuse to admit it about any "brown" group because of your bias.

The reconquista is a group run by a bunch of American Latinos that call themselves Chicanos. They were born here and not illegals but with the high percentages of Mexicans coming in here that helps them gain ethnic power. There probably aren't any more of them than there are KKKers but yet you choose to downplay their existance and up play and talk only about the KKKers. Why is that? They are both evil groups.

  14. Pete,
You go to too many ANTI websites. You are starting to believe their rhetoric.

The NCLR, NAACP, Countless Asian-American, African-American, etc. groups that are here to support education, humanitarian treatment, and help for minorities. Go to NCLR.com and read about all the good they do. Same with NAACP.

They are NOTHING like the HATE Groups like KKK, NSM, Neo-Nazis and other Hate Groups that want to kill and murder non-whites. You should be ashamed for trying to compare them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. No, I don't! I have always been against illegal immigration because it is against the law!

Keep denying that these groups are just as bad as any KKK one. The only difference is they are placing a non-white race above others and the law, that's all. They are all bad, the KKK, the NCLR and the whole lot of these race hustling groups.

No, YOU should be ashamed for being so biased you can't see what these groups are all about deep down. Do you actually think they would talk about in on their websites and admit the truth? The NCLR is actually not as sneaky about it because they are open about wanting to reward foreign nationals (who just happen to be ethnically like them)for breaking our immigration laws. That is a racist concept just like the KKK regardless that they don't actively seek to kill white people.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Did you form your views on illegal immigration by listening to the NCLR? If not, then stop accusing me of doing likewise.

  17. If anything, Dr. King would coordinate massive marches protesting our governments’ refusal to enforce our immigration laws. Yes, he would most definitely support the poor blacks nationwide who have been disproportionately displaced by massive illegal immigration. I’m sure the folks in Harlem would seek his help, and they would get it. We all know he lost his life while supporting the striking sanitation workers in Memphis. Why would anyone believe he wouldn’t feel compelled to help the citizens of this country against an insidious foreign presence?

Pro-illegals can twist it anyway they choose, but he would NOT support illegal aliens, particularly to the detriment of his own. And, by “his own” I mean legal citizens of this country. It would be counterproductive, to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  18. How does illegal immigration invoke memories of MLK? Illegal aliens are treated humanely for the most part. They are treated far better than any black citizen was treated in this country in the past. So, whenever I hear accusations of inhumanity and indignity relative to illegal immigration, I have to laugh.

I really don’t know how much more generous we can be. We pay for their children to receive an education, including ESL classes and free breakfast/lunch. We pay for them to give birth, as well as provide for them and their children once they are born. We treat them free of charge at our hospitals, including translator services. We provide free organ transplants and kidney dialysis. We provide them with subsidized housing, WIC, and welfare. We turn a blind eye to them loitering at Home Depot, and working illegally on construction sites. We absolve them of ID theft if they claim ignorance to using a “real” ID. Some states even issue them driver’s licenses, and offer in-state tuition. We do all of this, in spite of their illegal status. Yet, they show no appreciation, and arrogantly demand more.

So, tell me, how have they been denied basic human rights and dignity?

  19. An otherwise festive protest march against the immigration methods of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpio turned ugly Saturday afternoon when a small group brawled with police and hit a mounted officer and her horse with sticks.

The group was dressed entirely in black with bandanas over their faces and signs read "Assassinate Arpaio" and other anarchist messages.

  20. A new bipartisan resolution in the House opposes efforts to grant amnesty to illegal aliens. Introduced by Representatives Chaffetz (R-UT), Kratovil (D-MD), Hunter (R-CA), and Nye (D-VA), H. Res. 1026 asserts that Congress should "reject amnesty and any legal status which pardons those here in violation of our laws."

Ten Democrats and 12 Republicans are original sponsors of the BRIDGE Resolution (Bipartisan Reform of Immigration through Defining Good Enforcement), which also encourages Congress to make E-Verify mandatory for all employers and to "effectively secure and control United States borders."

Californians for Population Stabilization - ALERT! Support the new ANTI-Amnesty effort in Congress!

  22. The civil rights movement did not only involve just African Americans. Why dont people know the history of the entire civil rights movement? Mexicans, latinos, Asians, everyone was fighting for their rights during this time! We are fighting for our rights and it is similar to the Civil Rights Movement. So many Illegal immigrants have been here for so long and with their children as well, why should you make them go back to where they came from? What are they doing to us? Im Mexican American but I support my people and other races as well. The Arizona Law is ridiculous. Im Glad Mr. Gutierrez stuck up for his people. He reps my neighborhood and I appreciate it.

and to MMPETE----HOW THE HELL ARE WE INSULTING THE BLACK RACE BY SAYING ITS LIKE THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. MAYBE U NEED TO TAKE A HISTORY LESSON BUDDY.
