Weekend SB1070 Marches: A huge crowd of 50,000 - 100,000 marched AGAINST sb1070, Meanwhile a mere 5,000 supported sb1070 at their Buy-cott

This past Saturday, 50,000 - 100,000 people marched in a rally in Phoenix, Arizona to protest the racist sb1070 bill signed by Arizona governor Jan Brewer in April. Meanwhile in Tempe a mere 5,000 people conducted a "Buy-cott" to support sb1070. No businesses and a primarily all-white audience attended. (Question, How do you have a "Buy-cott" if NO BUSINESSES show up??)

In Phoenix, the Immigration march was non-violent and passed without incident, even though they had provocation (see later in article). Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon was a lead speaker at the Immigration March. He received one of the friendliest receptions, leading the crowd in chants of "Si, se puede!" "Let's call out to the [U.S.] Attorney General and the President of the United States," he said, "to please come to Arizona and file that lawsuit to stop this law now. Let your voices be heard!" AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka called on the President to protect the civil rights of all Arizonans, and for Congress to pass immigration reform immediately. He also spoke of union solidarity with immigrant workers. "In the labor movement we only really ask one question of anyone," he said. "That question is not where are your papers, that question is what side are you on?" Tohono O'odham tribal member Mike Wilson, had a great line about SB 1070. "Racial profiling did not start last month," he told everyone. "Racial profiling began in 1492."

The most invigorating speech came from Pastor Warren Stewart of the First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, who has spoken at previous rallies and has been working tirelessly to unify the African-American and Hispanic communities over this issue. As if addressing his congregants, he told the marchers, "We will not let our enemies turn back the clock to a day when we were judged by the color of our skin, and not the content of our character." He received thunderous applause when he informed the crowd that, "God is on our side as we fight for justice, liberty, equality for all people regardless of their color, and regardless of their country, regardless of their language. President Obama, hear us from Arizona. God put you in the White House, you are a person of color, stand with us!"

Meanwhile, at the Buy-cott in Diablo Stadium (no I am not making this up), the all-white rally (except for a handful of tokens) included Neo-Nazis and White Nationalist supporters. Local neo-nazis JT Ready, Harry Hughes, Scott Hume and their gang of NSM members rubbed elbows with the many Republican policitians at their rally. They listened and agreed with speakers, including Joe Arpaio, about the need for their racial profiling bill. Incidentally, neo-Nazi J.T. Ready and a half dozen others not only attended the Buy-cott, they also attended the Immigration March. The notorious Ready and his cronies showed up at the Immigration March with signs, confederate flags and also with LOADED GUNS. One of Ready’s fellow protesters was wearing a t-shirt promoting a “WHITE PEOPLE's Party.” That same man had a loaded shotgun strung across his shoulder. Ready was the spokesman for the protesters and when asked if they were ready to use their weapons he responded, “We are prepared to defend ourselves. That’s one of our rights here in Arizona too.”

Neo-Nazi Hughes' posted about the Buycott rally on his blog: "My self, along with several of my comrades" attended the (Buy-cott) demonstration. Hughes claimed he "met and mingled" with politicians present. Among the speakers in attendance were Sheriff Joe Arpaio. But it was this passage from Hughes' commentary in particular that damned the rally: "We were quite pleased to see so many White People gathered in one place to support the rule of law. As expected, many of the speakers made a point to stress that, `We are not racists.' Perhaps, they think if they say that enough times, they might actually believe it."

Race and ethnicity are very much factors in the pro-SB 1070 crowd, despite their careful inclusion of a few non-Anglo shills, like anti-Hispanic Hispanic wingnut Anna Gaines, and African-American nativist Ted Hayes. Still, take one look at the shots of the crowd, and you'll see that it was a Caucasian affair. Despite the nativists' insistence that they are not bigots, they most certainly are. SB 1070 made "attrition through enforcement" the policy of Arizona, and "attrition through enforcement" is essentially code for "drive the Mexicans out." Apparently, Spencer is backing state Senator Russell Pearce's efforts to undo birthright citizenship, as is enshrined in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The NSMs and the White Nationalists Mission is to ethnic cleanse our country of all people of color.

  2. Michelle,
I consider you anonymous. Anyone who is anonymous can say they are anything. Who is to know.

Anyone who supports and has a HEART and SOUL has not read the bill, has never experienced an arpaio and masked goon suppression sweep in a latino neighborhood like Guadelupe nor truly understands the impact sb1070 will have on friends and family.

If you still support it then you have no HEART nor SOUL and have no semblance of a clue to what our founding fathers intended when they set foot on this land in search of freedom from the tyranny they escaped from; no semblance of a clue of what our first generations, the huddled masses, went through when coming to this land of the free, of equality.

Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.

If you are who you say you are, then I welcome you to email me at dee_perezscott@yahoo.com
We can discuss this further, in depth. That is, if you are who you say you are.
