Illegal immigration into the United States has slowed considerably in the last several years, a study released Wednesday concludes. The decline marks the first significant turnaround in two decades, researchers with the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center say. As a result, the U.S. illegal immigrant population may have fallen as much as 8 percent from 2007 to 2009.
"We've seen a reversal in what had been the long-term growth in the illegal immigrant population," researcher Jeffrey S. Passel said Wednesday. An estimated 11.1 million illegal immigrants live in the United States. Possibly because of tighter enforcement measures and economic circumstances driving some immigrants back home, the population is down from its estimated 2007 peak of 12 million. "Particularly along the southern border, enforcement has ramped up considerably," Passel said. "It's harder and more dangerous for immigrants to cross into the country."
While studies prove the numbers are at a 20 year low, the death rate along the Arizona border is at a 5 year high! Deaths of illegal immigrants in Arizona have soared this summer toward their highest levels since 2005 - a fact that has surprised many who thought that the furor over the state's new immigration law and the 100-plus degree heat would draw them elsewhere along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border.
But at the Pima County morgue in Tucson, Ariz., the body bags are stacked on stainless-steel shelves from floor to ceiling. (Imagine the carnage!) A refrigerated truck has been brought in to handle the overflow at the multimillion dollar facility.
In July, 59 people died - 40 in the first two weeks when nighttime temperatures were the hottest in recorded history, hovering around the low 90s. The single-month death count is second only to July 2005, when 68 bodies were found.
Of this July's deaths, 44 were on the Tohono O'Odham Nation, a reservation the size of Connecticut that shares 75 miles of Arizona's border with Mexico, in Pima County - the home of the murder of Brisenia Flores, the location of the Neo-Nazi's and Minutemen's border stalkings. The Tohono tribe is opposed to humanitarian aid on its lands, believing it invites violence. Eighteen more people died in the first 23 days of August. Even with the prospect of a torturous death, and the bitter wrath they face in Arizona - Minutemen, Neo-Nazis and Arpaio, the immigrants, say the state's vast, sparsely populated terrain is still the best place for border jumpers. One can only imagine the horror these innocents face in their homeland that causes them to take such risks.

I guess the news hasn't gotten out yet that a Houston judge is turning the illegal aliens loose unless they have committed and been convicted of a crime. I hope the people of Houston feel really safe now that the judge has stepped in.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that in the second paragraph they say that the reduction is supposedly due to a decrease in illegal immigrants from "Caribbean, Central America and South America." What about Mexico? How can they list these other places as if they were the main problem and not even list Mexico which is the major source of illegal immigration?
ReplyDeleteIn otherwords there is no reduction in illegal aliens from Mexico. They are still coming by the thousands every day.
Dee wrote, "One can only imagine the horror these innocents face in their homeland that causes them to take such risks." Where are the new Benito Juarez and the new Pancho Villa when the Mexican people need them? It's time for the government to get tough on criminals posting all their pictures as "Wanted Dead or Alive" with a large enough reward to make it worth the risk to bounty hunters and others. Then the goverment need to make free tubal legations and vascectomies available to everyone and take whatever other steps are necessary to bring the population under control consistent with the carrying capacity of that arid land.
ReplyDeleteSee my post on Down There in Sonora for an inkling of the problem and what we are importing into the U.S.
These two results seem to be a little inconsistent with each other. How can more be dying if a net fewer are coming?
ReplyDeleteUltima, I suspect much of this has to do with the corrupt politicians on both sides of the border trying to maximize profits carrying nothing for the plight of every day human beings.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is, with the greed of Big Business and corrupt politicians, with programs like NAFTA and CAFTA, the poor have not jobs in Mexico. They can have no champions like Pancho Villa. Instead with the USA being the number one abuser of drugs in the world and with the demand so high, poor countries across the globe are forming drug cartels to feed our habit. No more heroes. They are all replaced by greedy criminals and politicians. That is why the poor are so very desperate.
ReplyDeleteFewer are coming .. but look at the location where more are dying.. Pima County.. where JT Ready and the Neo Nazis and Minutemen who murdered Brisenia Flores are stalking. It is all very obvious.
ReplyDeleteI did visit your blog ultima, and was surprised to see it was all about Dee. Are you jealous of her?
ReplyDeletewhoa! I won't risk my life tryin to cross a border getting me killed..the death rate is really alarming!
ReplyDeleteAnon,
ReplyDeleteWhere does it say that? The study says the REDUCTION is in number of illegal immigrants into this country is at its lowest rate in 20 years.

What do the drug cartels have to do with those crossing the border to find work? I believe this report is about less migrants crossing to find work and take up residence here so it isn't about the drug cartels. They are two different groups for the most part. The drug cartels are still bringing drugs over our border as always. Nothing has changed there.
ReplyDeleteNT,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. The temperatures are in the 120's this summer in the daytime and in the 90's at night. Plus this is the area where JT Ready, the NeoNazis and the Minutemen are stalking. This is the area where Shawna Forde and Gunny Bush murdered Brisenia and her Dad.
Those coming here must be in desperate straits. Why else would they risk it.
From what I've read, they "meet up" with the coyotes in Nogales, then in the middle of the night, the coyotes take them to the crossings or tunnels into the US and go through the desert trails. That is where all the danger lies, whether it be the intense heat, lack of water, vicious animals/snakes, or vicious humans. All compiled, it is one dangerous trek. Are they so desperate for escape that they are willing to take the well publicized risks? Must be because the numbers of deaths are not dwindling.
If it is me you are addressing here it is.
ReplyDeleteMuch of the decline comes from a sharp drop-off in illegal immigrants from the Caribbean, Central America and South America attempting to cross the southern border of the U.S., according to the Pew Hispanic Center, which based its report on an analysis of 2009 census data.
No, they aren't "desperate". They just think they can beat the odds, that's all. They think they are taking every precaution to keep themselves from harm but don't realize that the "odds" are against them. It is just human nature to take risks for a supposed prize not because of desperation. We all think we are infallible and we aren't.
ReplyDeleteAnon,
ReplyDeleteAgain, name yourself to differentiate yourself from Bad Anon.
Second, show your urls if you are disputing the original posts especially since they contain urls!
Anon,
ReplyDeleteHow can YOU say they are NOT desperate?? Have you walked in their shoes? Have you experienced the issues they are facing? I think NOT.
How can you PRETEND you KNOW what they are Thinking?
You are ASSUMING!!
I don't assume, I know. Mexico isn't that bad of a place. Their unemployment is lower than ours. Many of these migrants already had jobs in Mexico but they know they can make much more money here.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, there is no economical hardship status in our immigration laws. They can't claim persecution or asylum from physical harm or a war going on.
There is no need to scream in caps. If you want to debate with me I expect civility and no personal attacks. Your blog says so and that is why I am here to debate with someone with an opposing view that remains calm and civil. I hope I am in the right place.
NB,
ReplyDeleteYou KNOW??? You do not ASS-U-ME?
No economical hardships in their homelands?
Provide your facts, your interviews with those venturing here. You have no hard statistics, just your view.
BTW, I frequently use CAPS for emphasis. Anyone who comes here knows that.
I am as gentle as a grandmotherly lamb. I always remain civil and never name call.
Now provide your stats/urls to prove you KNOW. Then let's discuss.
I know because I speak Spanish and I have met many illegal immigrants from Mexico. They tell me that they come here because our jobs pay better and there are benefits they can't get in their homeland. Many have family already here so they come to visit them and don't go back. My personal experience with them is undeniable. Not one has told me that they experienced terrible hardships in Mexico.
ReplyDeleteYou say you always remain civil and yet you have jumped on me on just about every post I have written. Do you want to end this now before it accelerates? I am not interested in angry debate.
Where is my last post where I told you that I speak Spanish and that I have spoken with illegal immigrants?
ReplyDeleteAnon wrote, "I did visit your blog ultima, and was surprised to see it was all about Dee. Are you jealous of her?"
ReplyDeleteShe has nothing that I would ever want to be jealous about. I merely use that technique to try to tell the other side of the story when my links or responses are omitted here. Search on Dee Perez-Scott and you will see what I mean.
NB,
ReplyDeleteAs an fyi, I moderate my blog comments and get to them when I have a few hours to blog each day. I don't monitor them 24/7. I have to monitor them because Bad Anon sends me at least 20 - 30 profane/nasty comments each day 24/7.
I'm not ignoring you at all.
