Illegal immigration slows as economy weakens
WASHINGTON -- Illegal immigration has slowed in the past three years, and the influx of legal permanent immigrant residents in the United States now exceeds the number of new undocumented residents, according to a report released Thursday by a Washington think tank. There were approximately 11.9 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States as of March, down from 12.4 million in March 2007, says the report by the Pew Hispanic Center. The number of people coming into the country illegally decreased from 800,000 a year from 2000 through 2004 to about 500,000 a year from 2005 through 2008. The number of legal permanent immigrant residents - those granted lawful permission to live in the United States but who are not citizens - who came into the country in 2007 was about 650,000. That was the first time in a decade that new legal immigrant residents outnumbered new illegal immigrants, the study said. It cautioned that the changes may not be statistically significant because of the possibility of sampling errors.
In the past decade, large numbers of undocumented immigrants arrived at a time when legal immigration remained stable. "In the last year or two, there has been no growth at all of incoming illegal immigrants," senior demographer Jeffrey Passel, who co-authored the report, said during a telephone conference to discuss his findings. "It was growing rapidly and substantially over 15 years and now has essentially come to a halt.
"There are far fewer undocumented immigrants coming into the country." The report was not designed to explain why the numbers have decreased, but it suggests that possible reasons include the heightened focus on enforcement of immigration laws and slower U.S. economic growth. "The drop reflects the weakness of the economy, particularly the sectors that employ undocumented workers like construction," said Harley Shaiken, a professor at UC Berkeley specializing in labor issues, said there are a number of powerful forces reducing the numbers of undocumented immigrants. "People are less likely to risk everything to get here if they can't get a job."

Would it not be more of a reason to continue Criminal Profiling and asking Citizenship Status upon being caught for Law Violations? The Laws must be enforced up to and beyond the removal of all "Illegal Aliens", so the verification of Citizenship Status should not be denied.

  2. It is called criminal, probability profiling dee, and we have a long ways to go to rid ourselves of the rest of the illegal aliens still in this country. The dropped number of illegal aliens due to less entering or being deported is only a drop in the bucket when you consider we have at least 20 million of them still here.

As I have said numberous times if a white male commits a crime, you don't question black females. You question those who most likely fit the description of the criminal. It is the way that law enforcement works and rightly so. If you are a Hispanic citizen you have nothing to fear all they have to do is show proper I.D. if they are questioned. What is the big deal? We know it isn't dee, you scream racial profiling because you don't want the illegals to be detained and deported. You are so transparant.

  3. it is not racial profiling to not want to pay the bills for welfare, education, drunk driving
    health care, incarceration...that
    are someone else's bills.

The country is in such bad shape now that to put billions of dollars spend on illegal's exenses
on the backs of America's legal
    taxpayers is simply unfair.

Why do you call it racial profiling
if we don't want this burden. I
cannot even take care of my own kids.

  4. Look no further than California, home of more illegal aliens than anywhere else...broke...hospitals closed...homes in foreclosure...sanctuary cities ...soon the whole state to shut down.

And they want us to bail them out..

Sorry people...you made this mess...you clean it up

  5. anon, I live in Calif. and it disheartens me also what has been going on in our state. Of course, the federal government is to blame also for not securing our borders in the first place and yet insisting that we support illegal aliens via education, healthcare. Our federal government also needs to recind the 14th Amendment so that children born of illegal aliens on our soil do not become birthright citizens and therefore our financial responsibility.

It really comes down to our federal government being mostly responsible for what is going on in our states and cities.

No. Racial Profiling is NEVER acceptable. Now more than ever, with no excuses, Racial Profiling will NEVER be acceptable.
I ask all Latinos to go to the voting booth and make your voice be heard! Vote OUT ALL Racial Profilers (like Arpaio, and anyone condoning his suppression sweeps) and Vote for Obama in November!

  8. Anon,
You know perfectly well what I am talking about. Racial profiling is specifically targetting Latinos as a group, stormtrooping their neighborhoods (as Arpaio does), instilling FEAR and TERROR so people are afraid to go outside and children afraid to play in the park. That is Racial Profiling. It is illegal and should not be condoned! Anyone who does it should be voted out of office and should be charged criminally!

The so called Billions spent is a LIE. What is ruining this economy is the villaneous mismanagement and de-regulation by the Republicans and your Prez Bush and his cohort McCain!

  10. Again, dee it isn't racial profiling but probable, criminal profiling. Do I have to repeat yet again that if a white male commits a crime, those that fit that description would be the ones questioned? When are you going to answer my question? "Hispanic citizens have valid I.D. so what would they have to fear by just asked to see that I.D."? Why don't you just come out and admit that your screaming racial profiling is all about your objection to illegal aliens of your ethnic kind being detained and deported? Let the truth set you free, dee!

    ReplyDelete
  11. What would Latino ciitzens have to fear, dee? How is being asked for I.D. being terrorized? Why would their children be afraid to play in the park, dee? Their children are also citizens. Why don't you answer the questions, dee?

As I said, if a white male commits a crime and many white males are questioned because they fit the description, is that being terrorized? You are so transparant, dee. All loyal Americans would want criminals to be questioned and arrested, including those in our country illegaly because it is against the law. Why do you care so little for this country and its citizens?

    ReplyDelete
  12. The billions spent on illegal aliens and their children born on our soil is not a lie, dee. Liquid has provided you with government statistics on it in the past.

  13. No, dee don't be ridiculous. All minorities don't look alike to me. Hispanics will have a tendency to have a certain look seperate from blacks and Asians (for the most part). The picture depicts a woman who looks Asian in the eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Let me clarify my last remark about race/ethnicity. Hispanics who are mestizo (a mix of Spaniard and native indian) have a "tendency" to have a certain look. It is all about genetics dee, why do you find that offensive? It is no different than someone who it totally white genetically will have a tendency to have a certain look.

Who is Racial Profiling?? Arpaio isn't, and he's been investigated for it and come up clean. So who is 'Racial Pofiling' then?? Whats the population of the areas in question?? Mostly Hispanic?? How can they be 'racially profiled' if they are the majority of the area??

Your racial profiling is nothing more than your accusations with no substantiations to prove it or back it up. Therefor how can racial profiling exist and how can it then be proven??

    ReplyDelete
  16. Pat,
Obviously you do not understand that Racial Profiling is against the law and it is NEVER OK!
Obviously you have never been a victim nor lived in fear under these conditions but ask the Latino people in Mariscopa county or in Tulsa who have undergone Racial Profiling due to Arpaio or the Restrictionist laws. Ask them what it is like to live in fear, children afraid to play outside, being stormtrooped in a church when you are making your Confirmation. This MUST stop!!!
Latinos and all Americans who love Freedom MUST VOTE these people OUT OF OFFICE!

  17. Patriot,

I have some Latino friends who often get asked if they are Hawaiian or Filipino. Yes, there are Hispanics who are Asian! Look no further than former President of Peru, Alberto Fujimori.

You need to get over what a "Hispanic" should look like. My own aunt, a Chicana from Colorado, was often called a "gook" during the Vietnam years by people who think that she should look a certain way.

  19. My parents came from the Philippine Islands, a place that was conquered and colonized by Spain in the 16th century. It is considered an Asian country, yet there are many like me who look and fit the description of latino/hispanic, even though they are not. I've always been mistaken for latino, usually mexican. People NEVER think of me as Filipino. I can tell you that racial profiling does exist, and dee is right. It is never OK. It is more than just being asked for my ID. I have been haraased and discriminated against for most of my life because of my looks. At one point I tried to distance myself as much as I could from latinos and hispanics, thinking if I could only pass for white, I'd be "safe." I soon realized that it is not good to give in to racism and prejudice. I now embrace the part of me that I have in common with the so-called alien invaders, and see the good in people, the comonality we all share as inhabitants of this country. The treatment of people in this country based on race and ethnicity is despicable, it is not OK to treat people that way based on perception. Even if undocumented, it isn't fair to treat fellow human beings this way. Pat and liquid can say all they want about cost of healthcare and education, etc, but it's all BS and hyped up. I urge people to check sources of info. There are many sources to get info that enforce hatred and bigotry but are based on false stats. Undocumented immigrants are scapegoats for all of the problems of today, but they contribute more to this country than they take. People sometimes argue that they hate all illegals, but guess who gets the brunt of most of that hatred? The hispanic and latino types. The "burden" of illegals doesn't excuse the actions of "patriotic" types. We will always be a country of immigrants. Learn what the real threats are to this country, and treat people as you want to be treated.

  20. Dee, So what you are saying then is that if a white male commits a crime and law enforcement questions white males in the course of the investigation, it is racial profiling and against the law? LOL! Read liquid's post. The majority in Arapaio's jurisdiction are Hispanic. How can it then be racial profiling? As liquid stated he was acquitted of any racial profiling anyway. You just don't give up do you? No matter how many facts get in your way.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dee, why don't you answer my question rather than continuing on your stupid rant? What do Hispanic citizens or their children have to fear by being questioned or even having ICE or any other law enforcement at their door if they aren't guilty of anything? ANSWER THE QUESTION, DEE?

In answer to your question, yes I have been questioned by the police before during the course of an investigation even though I wasn't guilty of anything. I didn't take exception to it and I wasn't traumatized for life like you are trying to exaggerate about Latino citizens. Grow up dee or move to Mexico as it appears that is where you belong.

  22. adriana, what part of "tendency" to look like if you are of mestizo genetic makeup didn't you understand? "Tendency" doesn't mean always! Comprehend what you are reading, will you!

    ReplyDelete
  23. anon, you don't have you facts straight or your sources for your claims obviously. Liquid has supplied government sources for the negatives of illegal immigration in the past. Can you do the same?

The rest of your post is just BS. There is no scapegoating of illegal aliens. The facts stand for themselves and no one is saying that all of the ills in this country are due to illegal aliens. There is no hatred and bigotry for the most part about the illegal alien issue. It is about laws, period!

Hispanics are the majority in this country illegally, duh! If the majority of illegals were Chinese then they would be the targets! Go play your victim card elsewhere!

I agree treat people as you would want to be treated. Illegals broke into our country and that wasn't treating U.S. citizens well by doing that so you reap what you sow. Good point!

No we are not a nation of immigrants anymore. We have been a nation of Americans for many generations now. We are a nation that takes in immigrants just as many other countries do but citizens far outnumber immigrants in our country now. Therefore we are not a nation of immigrants!

  26. Pat,
I have answered your question a thousand times. Racial Profiling is WRONG! and should NEVER be tolerated. As FM says, it goes beyond just asking and providing ID. It is Racial Hatred and Discrimination! It is scapegoating.
    It causes FEAR and Intimidation.
Remember Arpaios stalking a children´s Confirmation Ceremony and the children crying in fear! Remember the tears! The Fear! Racial Profiling is WRONG and it is against the LAW!

Thank you for joining my blog. I hope you come back here often! And please, do not be taken aback by comments from the ANTIs here. I allow both sides to comment unmoderated as long as they remain civil and do not use profane language. I think we need both sides to talk so we understand each other.

Your comments are from your heart! Thank you!! I feel as you do! Racial Profiling and ALL the fear and hatred that comes with it! I get it too sometimes! We are all people! This should not be happening. We have allowed this behavior to go unpunished. Now it is time for ALL of us who understand these issues to voice our concerns in the VOTING BOOTH!!
    We must VOTE FOR CHANGE!!!
We must help all of our relatives to vote. Mother, Father, sister, brother, children, Aunts, Uncles! Have a party on election day. Car Pool! We must ALL Vote!!

  28. You haven't answered any questions, dee. You just keep screaming racial profiling when it fact it is probable, criminal profiling as I have stated over and over. Want me to repeat yet once again my analogy of a white male committing a crime and who gets questioned?

So ICE and all law enforcement are guilty of racial hatred and discrimination against Latinos? LOL!

Get off your stupid rants dee, it is getting old and you just aren't listening because you are blinded by your tribal mentality rather than your love for this country and the rule of law.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Patriot, I know that tendency does not mean always. You are making stereotypes about what Asians and Hispanics should look like. If you studied your history, you would not be so surprised by the similarities. The Native Americans have "Asiatic" features because they came from Asia. And since many Latinos are mestizo, it is not unusual for them to have "Asian" features like straight dark hair and almond shaped eyes.

There are also black Hispanics, like Celia Cruz, Manny Ramirez, etc. Your notion about Hispanics looking separate (or as you say "seperate") from blacks and Asians is very stereotypical and not even grounded in history.

But whatever, if you like coming here and antagonizing Dee, more power to you. At least you aren't engaging voters or young impressionable people with your ideas about what people from different ethnic groups should look like.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh please, not another one I have to explain the difference between genetics, race, ethnicity and culture to! So if I said that most Asians tend to have slanted or Almond shaped eyes that would be stereotyping? If I said that most Anglos have white skin would that be stereotyping? If I said that most Black people have dark skin that would be stereotyping? Get real! Genetics are genetics and we can't change the basics. All there is are some variances among certain races depending on the dominant genes of an individual. Why do you go on the defensive over biological facts?

Dee, If you and your family are proud and patriotic Americans, then GOD BLESS YOU all! So what exactly is your problem? You say YOUR family are all legal. This is what America has the right to demand, that the citizens in their country are LEGAL! Mexico doesn't allow illegal immigration so why should we? If white people started invading Mexico, demanding all kinds of rights and demanding that the Mexican government NOT enforce their immigration laws, what would the Mexican government do Dee? Come on, they would kick us out faster than you could say, "but I am just here looking for a better life." Why all this whining and outright lying about our law enforcement "terrorizing"? That's bull and you know it! Either stand with America or get the hell out.

  33. Anon,
This is what you are missing.
It is the US Admininstration in collaboration with the elite in Mexico that have allowed the 12M to be here in our country. This is all in support of the Global Economy. I have written many blogs about this. Go back and check the archives. You just don´t get it because you choose not to get it.

All ICE is doing now with these ICE Raids is picking on various communities and conducting ICE Raids or Suppression Sweeps. This is all to appease you ANTIs and to fill up the crony owned private detention center prisons. They could care less about the poor treatment the workers receive, they just want to appease you.

If we keep the Republicans in power, things will remain the same. People will continue to be mistreated.

What we need is comprehensive immigration reform. Fix the backlog so people-workers can come in legally.
