Republicans Against Immigration Reform say they Don't Need Latino Votes, Just More White Votes!

More and more Tea Party Republicans are saying they are Against Passing Comprehensive Immigration Reform and they DO NOT need the Latino Vote. Instead, they are starting a movement to increase the White - ANTI-Latino Vote!

Fox News anchor Brit Hume called "baloney" Monday on the notion that House Republicans must help approve the immigration reform legislation that just passed the Senate, arguing that Hispanic voters are still not as important to the GOP as white voters.
The right-leaning Hume was responding to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who warned Sunday that Republicans may never win another presidential election if they don't help pass immigration reform.
"And I am absolutely convinced that this trope that you’re hearing that says that if the Republicans don’t go for immigration reform much as the Senate has done, they’ll never win another presidential election. Oh, baloney," Hume said during an appearance on the conservative cable news channel. "If you look at the statistics, you find there was one significant bloc of voters who turned out in smaller numbers this time in a major way — way below expectations, below even their '08 turnout — and that was white voters. Now, that doesn’t mean that if they turned out that Romney would have gotten them all but it shows you that this Hispanic vote, which is I think now 8.5 percent of the electorate or something like that, is not nearly as important as, still, as the white vote, which is above 70 percent."
Hume added, "So, if you look at it from an ethnic point of view, that addresses the question of whether you need to get right with the Hispanics."

This is NOT a new idea. This "Promote the White Vote" was initially reported on the Hate website "VDARE" in November, 2000.

Here at VDARE, we've discussed repeatedly how dire will be the long-term impact of immigration on the Republican Party. It's crucial to understand, however, that the long-term has not quite arrived. The GOP is not yet held hostage. It still has a window of opportunity - definitely stretching through the next recession but maybe not to the recession after that - to save itself by changing the immigration laws.... picked up an additional 3 percent of the white vote? The most obvious source: white union families. The 26% of the electorate with a union member in their households voted 59% to 37% for Gore. For the time being, most union families are still white. So if Bush could have won enough white labor families to raise his total labor vote from 37% to about 46%, that would have done the trick of lifting his share of the white vote from 54% to 57%.

Anti-Latino Republicans in the House Voted to END the Dream Policy! Demand Mass Deportation!

Anti-Latino Republicans in the House unanimously voted to END the Dream Policy -- the policy which allows Dreamers -- young, undocumented immigrants and other people deemed low-priority -- to stay in the U.S.

Far Right Wing, Tea Party extremist, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), was responsible for drafting this amendment and adding it to the Department of Homeland Security spending bill. Democrats on the House floor reacted with boos when this amendment was added to the bill.

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said in a statement that the vote prohibits the administration “from implementing executive amnesty” without congressional action. "My amendment blocks many of the provisions that are mirrored in the Senate’s ‘Gang of Eight’ bill. If this position holds, no amnesty will reach the President’s desk,” he said.

Regardless of these heinous Republican efforts, Senate Democrats will NOT allow their "Deport Dreamers" amendment to pass. Additionally, our President's spokesman has already said he would NEVER sign it if it reaches his desk.

United We Dream, an advocacy group of young undocumented immigrants, said in a statement that the amendment is "an outrage and the exact opposite of what our country needs from its political leaders." "Does Speaker [John] Boehner want to follow Rep. Steve King’s lead and seal his party’s fate as an out-of-touch, extremist party that has forever marginalized the immigrant and Latino community?" the group continued. "Or will the House take a new direction and pass immigration reform that not only stops the deportations of DREAMers and our families but also creates a clear path to citizenship? It’s up to them. DREAMers will not let politicians get away with this."

Ted Cruz is NOT Hispanic and is ANTI-Comprehensive Immigration Reform

I don’t know why anyone considers Ted Cruz a Hispanic. Cruz is Canadian, born in the Canadian city of Calgary, Alberta, on Dec. 22, 1970. His mother is of Irish descent. His father, Rafael, though from Cuba, was a friend of Castro and fought along-side him until he came to America in 1957.
Cruz’ father did not become a US Citizen until 2005 when Cruz began his quest to run for office. Cruz did not even acknowledge his so-called Hispanic heritage until he ran for Senate.

The Tea Party says about Cruz, “We have a new messiah, it seems. Another polished orator with a made-for-TV smile and a Harvard law degree. A success story born of humble beginnings and exotic demographic... A young, sudden star who, barely a week after winning a Republican primary runoff for U.S. Senate (his first election!) is being mentioned as a presidential contender in 2016."

Latinos In Arizona, Be Careful! If Supreme Court Rules Against Us, You May Be In Danger by Rogue Anti Latino Enforcers!

East Valley Tribune Reports: Just days before an anticipated Supreme Court ruling, the American Civil Liberties Union wants state officials to warn possible “rogue” officers from enforcing the state’s immigration law before they are legally entitled to do so.

In a letter to the Peace Officers Standards and Training Board on Thursday, Alessandra Meetze, executive director of the Arizona chapter, said even if the Supreme Court upholds part of SB 1070, that does not free officers to immediately start checking (Racially Profiling) the immigration status of those they have stopped.
At the very least, she said, the high court would order U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton to dissolve the injunction she issued nearly two years ago barring the state from enforcing several key provisions while the legality of the law is debated. And that process could take some time.
But Meetze also reminded Lyle Mann, the AzPOST executive director, that there are other challenges to SB 1070 pending which are not linked to the current case before the Supreme Court — and not based on the arguments of the Obama administration that federal law preempts the state statute. And Meetze said her organization is considering “all options” if the court sides with Arizona, including seeking a new injunction based on its own claims that SB 1070 will automatically lead to illegal racial profiling.
Mann was out of state on Thursday and an aide said he would respond to Meetze’s letter today.
The letter comes days after Gov. Jan Brewer ordered Mann’s agency to update the training video and materials it had prepared in 2010 in anticipation of SB 1070 taking effect.
Much of that surrounded the section which requires officers who have stopped someone to verify if that person is in the country legally if there is reasonable suspicion that he or she is not. The law allows the use of the person’s race to be used as a factor in making that determination, though it cannot be the only factor.
Mann said at the time the information is designed to ensure that officers do not engage in racial profiling. The training materials include guidelines that Border Patrol officers use when determining who to question.
Meetze said she fears that these new materials, being sent out now, amount to an invitation for officers to start making these inquiries the moment the Supreme Court issues its ruling, assuming it upholds the legality of what foes of the law have called the “show me your papers” provision.
She also pointed out those other pending lawsuits raise significant claims, including not just racial discrimination but constitutional questions that touch on the First and Fourth Amendments.
“Any law enforcement agency that attempts to enforce the enjoined provisions of SB 1070 before those provisions are deemed legally enforceable would expose itself to considerable scrutiny,” she wrote to Mann.
Meetze was more blunt in a separate statement.
“Rogue police officers who take it upon themselves to demand people’s papers before any part of the law even goes into effect will inevitably leave their communities highly exposed to lawsuits brought on by victims of these discriminatory practices,” she said.
Meetze also said that the training materials themselves are flawed because they are based on what courts have said the Border Patrol is entitled to do. She said those rulings involve people near the border and have nothing to do with normal interactions that state and local police have with those they stop.
For example, those materials list a host of factors that can be considered in determining whether there is reasonable suspicion someone is in this country illegally, such a travelling in a group, being in an overloaded car or being unable to speak English. Meetze said there are many people who are in this country legally who might fall into those categories.

From NUMBERSUSA: House approves amendments to Homeland Security bill that increase interior enforcement and help secure the border Last night (Thursday), the House passed the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2013, and with it, eight amendments with the intent to increase interior enforcement and secure the border were approved and added to the final bill. Under House Leadership of the last few Congresses, it's been tough to get recorded votes from the full House, but the DHS spending bill is annual measure we can count on!
In total, there were eight immigration amendments that we (Anti Latino Hate Group) supported, and you helped support with your phone calls to Congress on Thursday. We were only able to get roll call votes on three of the eight, but those three votes will have an impact on our Congressional Grade Cards.
The first amendment to pass with a roll call was offered by Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) and Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.). The amendment would reallocate $10 million from the Office of the Under Secretary of Management to Border Patrol for the sole purpose of building cell phone towers on the Southwest border with Mexico.
The need for cell phone towers along the border came during the aftermath of the murder of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz who was killed by an illegal alien on his property that runs adjacent to the border in early-2011. Kretnz's wife, Sue, believes that her husband was trying to call for help when he encountered the illegal alien on his property, but he was in a cell phone dead spot. Krentz was represented in Congress by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords who authored a bill to build the cell phone towers. Reps. Poe and Altmire wrote the amendment based on the concept of the Giffords' bill. It was approved by the House on Wednesday night by a 302-to-113 margin with 81 Democrats voting with the GOP majority.
The second amendment to pass with a roll call vote was offered by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) and would PROHIBIT the implementation and execution of the Morton Memos. ICE Director John Morton wrote three separate memos in 2011 that instructed immigration agents to use prosecutorial discretion when they came in contact with illegal aliens. The memos prioritized criminal illegal aliens over non-criminal aliens and specifically protected illegal aliens that could benefit from the DREAM Act. The memos, in effect, offered an administrative amnesty to certain illegal aliens. The amendment passed the House on Thursday by a 238-to-175 margin. The vote was split along party lines - ALL REPUBLICANS AND 10 DEMS.
The final amendment to pass with a roll call vote was offered by Rep. John Sullivan (R-Okla.) and would PROHIBIT the Department of Homeland Security from TERMINATING 287(g) agreements with local law enforcement agencies.(MUST PARTNER WITH ARPAIO LIKE AGENCIES) The 287(g) program allows local law enforcement to partner-up with ICE and facilitates the training of agents so they can enforce federal immigration laws. In Pres. Obama's 2013 proposed budget, he removed all funding for 287(g), but the DHS spending bill added the funding back in. Rep. Sullivan's amendment was offered to prevent the Administration from ending the program by simply terminating all the contracts. The amendment passed by a 250-to-164 margin with support from 18 Democrats.
The other amendments to pass without a roll call vote include:
•Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) and David Schweikert's (R-Ariz.) amendment to prevent funds from going to sanctuary cities. As the former mayor of Hazleton, Pa., one of the first cities to pass immigration-enforcement ordinances, ending sanctuary cities is a priority for Rep. Barletta and he also has offered legislation in Congress to prevent federal funding from going to sanctuary cities. It's important to note that this amendment would only prevent DHS spending from going to these cities.
•Rep. Diane Black's (R-Tenn.) amendment to prohibit the funding for a Public Advocate position within ICE. In February, the Obama Administration announced plans for this new position that would speak on behalf of illegal aliens. We believe that funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement should be used to enforce immigration laws instead of being used to advocate on behalf of illegal aliens.
•Rep. Chip Cravaack's (R-Minn.) amendment would keep criminal illegal aliens in jail until they're deported. Rep. Cravaack also offered this amendment last year, and it was approved by the House. Certain criminal illegal aliens who are awaiting execution of their deportation orders are, by federal law, required to be detained until deported. But two years ago, a criminal illegal alien who had been convicted of multiple drunk driving charges and had deportation orders was released. He got behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and caused an accident that killed one and injured two in Northern Virginia.
•Rep. Sam Graves' (R-Ga.) amendment would prohibit funds from being used to implement or execute the "Provisional Unlawful Presence Waivers of Inadmissibility for Certain Immediate Relatives" rule proposed by DHS. (SEPARATE FAMILIES) The proposed rule was entered into the federal register earlier this year and proposes to allow immediate relatives of U.S. citizens to remain in the country while they await a waiver decision from DHS. Because the process to receive a green card for immediate family members can often be a lengthy one, some family members decide to enter the U.S. illegally and wait it out, however, they must apply and get processed for their green cards outside of the United States. When their number is called, they risk being detected by immigration agents when they leave the country, and that could result in either a 3-year or 10-year bar from entering the United States. In special cases, DHS will offer a waiver to the 3-year and 10-year bar, but this proposed rule would make most illegal aliens that fall under this category eligible for the waiver.
•Rep. Tom Price's (R-Ga.) amendment would prohibit funds from being used to circumvent the enforcement of immigration laws. This amendment was actually combined with two other amendments to create an En Bloc Amendment. These amendments are usually grouped together because they receive unanimous support from the House.

Meet Kris Kobach, Mitt Romney's Immigration Advisor and the Reason Latinos will NEVER Support Romney!

Anyone who is familiar with the Immigration Debate knows Kris Kobach. In Immigration Circles, Kobach is known as the Architect. Kobach has worked with key state legislators, like Alabama state Sen. Scott Beason, and municipal authorities, like notorious Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, in drafting and polishing dozens of restrictive immigration laws. He's written parts of Arizona's sb1070 and Alabama's HB 56. As a 2004 congressional candidate, Kobach received campaign contributions from John Tanton's wife's US Immigration Reform PAC and former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo's Team America PAC.

Kobach is also Mitt Romney's Immigration Advisor for his Presidential Campaign.

Kobach is a dangerous character. Not only is he the chief architect in Romney's "Self Deportation" policy, which in reality, is a precursor for right wing extremists' Mass Deportation initiatives, Kobach is also leading the charge for changing Birthright Citizenship - the 14th Ammendment of the Constitution. Kobach wants to change the Constitution so that Immigrant Children will NO LONGER be Citizens. Instead he wants them to be children with NO COUNTRY -- as has happened in Germany when they changed their Birth Right Citizenship laws. He and his cohort Roy Beck from NumbersUSA are also advocating the reduction of Legal Immigration. They want to reduce the number of LEGAL Immigrants from Latino countries and other countries they deem not worthy. Instead, they advocate massive reductions to Legal Immigration and put in place policies so that only those they deem worthy are eligible to immigrate to the U.S.

It is critical that we keep ourselves informed of who Romney is cozying up to and what Romney and all candidates for President are proposing if they are elected. If we are not careful and Romney or another Republican is elected, many of the proposals currently advocated by the likes of Kobach, Numbers USA, F.A.I.R. and John Tanton may, in fact, become law.

10 Facts about Kobach:
10. Kobach is a lawyer for the anti-immigrant law firm Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), the legal arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Both of these organizations were founded by the white nationalist, John Tanton, whose legacy has been hard to shake. FAIR has solicited and received money from the Pioneer Fund, a foundation that finances pseudo-scientific ventures attempting to prove the genetic superiority of white, European-descended peoples.

9. During his ill-fated 2004 Congressional campaign, Kobach accepted $10,000 from the US Immigration Reform PAC. The PAC was founded by Mary Lou Tanton, the wife of white nationalist John Tanton, the architect of the modern day anti-immigrant movement.

8. Kobach often defends accusations of bigotry by noting his mission trips to Africa through his church. His church, according to Religious Dispatches, is “part of the Anglican Mission of the Americas.” This is sponsored the extremely homophobic Church of Rwanda. Religious Dispatches goes further, detailing comments made by the Church of Rwanda’s former Archbishop who “likened homosexuality to moral genocide.”

7. Kobach’s work at IRLI has also led him to write and defend anti-immigrant ordinances in small towns across America. In many cases, these ordinances have cost the towns millions of dollars in legal fees, with the bill going to the town’s residents. The increases in taxes to help fund the ordinances defense don’t really fall in line with the “fiscal responsibility” the GOP has prided itself on.

6. Kobach was recently fined $5000 for inaccurately reporting campaign funds. Instead of accepting the fine and moving on, Kobach started spouting conspiracy theories, blaming “anti-conservative bias among some members of the commission.”

5. In 2009, Kobach was hired by notorious Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to train his deputies in immigration matters. The Department of Justice recently released a report on Arpaio’s office which concluded that the office’s “discriminatory treatment of Latinos reflects a general culture of bias within MCSO.”

4. While working with IRLI Kobach has helped to draft two of the harshest anti-immigrant laws in the country, namely Arizona’s SB 1070 and Alabama’s HB 56, two laws that have stripped the basic civil and human rights of immigrants and people of color in those states. While Kobach has proclaimed total victory, these laws have proven to be extremely divisive.

3. Kobach has frequently spoken of his desire to “restore the original meaning” of the 14th Amendment. The original meaning in Kobach’s eyes would be an end to birthright citizenship in the United States, an issue that Romney has not taken a stand on as of yet.

2. Kobach is a former Department of Justice employee who created a program titled the “National Security Entry-Exit Registration System.” The program “required individuals from more than 20 predominantly Arab countries to register with the government on arrival and departure from the U.S.” It was abandoned in 2011 after years of criticism for its discriminatory policies.

1. Kobach defended the Apartheid policy in South Africa in a 1990 book. He stated, “Clearly, reform has become the clarion call of so many businesses because it is seen as a means of achieving stability. Yet, strict Verwoerdian apartheid enforced with an iron fist can also be seen as a route to a more stable South Africa. ”

Republicans Continue to Attempt to Exterminate Viable Voters! Say Spanish "Language of the Ghetto"

During a recent debate, both Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney supported getting RID of bilingual ballots when the topic was brought up by the moderator. "I would have ballots in English," Gingrich said. "And I think you could have programs where virtually everybody would be able to read the ballots." Romney agreed. "I think Speaker Gingrich is right with regards to what he's described," he said.

That wasn't much of a stretch for Gingrich, who once called Spanish "the language of living in a ghetto." Yet their glib demand for English-only ballots would require amending the Voting Rights Act and doing away with hard-won legal requirements that have existed for decades.

BREAKING NEWS: Feds CHARGE Arpaio with Civil Rights Violations and Racial Profiling Against Latinos!

The Department of Justice (DOJ) released the results of a three-year investigation of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his Masked Goon Squad. They concluded what we've been telling you all along. Arpyao and his deputies are the ones who've been breaking law.

According to the DOJ's investigation, Arpaio and his Goons routinely discriminate against Latinos and retaliate against anyone they view as their enemy. This is in violation of both the Constitution and the Civil Rights Act.

Thomas Perez, assistant Attorney General for the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, says the investigation uncovered rampant widespread racial profiling. "Our experts found that Latino drivers were four to nine times more likely to be stopped than similarly situated non-Latino drivers." Perez added Latinos were often stopped without cause. "This case involved the most egregious racial profiling in the United States that he had ever personally observed in the course of his work."

Federal investigators made two more critical findings regarding the Maricopa County sheriff's office.
1. An illegal pattern of retaliation that comes straight from the top of the department. "People opposed to the department's policies were frequently arrested and jailed for no reason or forced to defend against specious civil complaints or other baseless charges." Those retaliated against include local government officials, attorneys who raised the specter of discrimination by the sheriff and even some reporters in the community.

2. Arpayaso's Detention officers (goons) rampantly and maliciously punish Latino inmates, particulary those with accents, for failing to immediately respond to commands in English. The goons REFUSE to accept grievance complaints written in Spanish and they routinely FORCE Latino inmates to sign English-language forms that could waive their constitutional rights without offering translation help.

In the sheriff's jail, for example, detention officers invoked offensive slurs and profanities against Latinos, calling them "wetbacks," "Mexican bitches," and "stupid Mexicans," the Justice Department letter said. "Sheriff Arpaio's own actions have helped nurture MCSO's culture of bias," said the letter, written to the Maricopa County attorney. For example, the sheriff apparently endorsed one constituent's letter asking for a "round-up" at one Phoenix street corner of "dark-skin(ned)" people: Arpaio told a member of his command staff in a note to "(h)ave someone handle this," the Justice Department said.

Additionally, during today's press conference, the DOJ reported: "We are also reviewing allegations that MCSO has failed to investigate a large number of sex crimes." The sheriff's office has acknowledged to federal authorities that 432 cases of sexual assault and child molestation were not properly investigated over a three-year period ending in 2007, and many of the victims apparently were Latinos, the Justice Department said.

The DOJ said: "In short, MCSO is broken in a number of critical respects. The problems are deeply rooted in (Maricopa County Sheriff's Office) culture, and are compounded by (its) penchant for retaliation against individuals who speak out," The DOJ authorities are also looking at allegations of excessive force and a deliberate failure to provide law enforcement services in Latino communities.

ARPAIO MUST AGREE TO MAKE RAMPANT CHANGES BY JANUARY 2012 OR THE DOJ WILL FILE FEDERAL CHARGES AGAINST HIM!

LA TIMES REPORTS:
But Arpaio is hardly the victim of a conspiracy. The Justice Department's scathing report makes that clear. An expert hired by the department said this case involves "the most egregious racial profiling in the United States" that he has ever seen in the course of his work, according to the report. On Arpaio's watch, deputies went unchecked. One officer used his patrol car to intentionally hit and drag a Latino man and then instructed other deputies to "leave him there," investigators said. TeaParty Republican Sen. John Cornyn from Texas led the charge to defeat the Dream Act! This led a "straight A" Latino Dream Student to commit Suicide!

Before you read this story, please get out your handkerchiefs. This is a very sad story about a promising young Latino student whose life was shattered and ended early -- due to the hate-filled attacks led by Tea Party Republicans!

This is a true story about a young Latino Boy. His name was Joaquin Luna, aged 18, a straight A student. When Joaquin was six months old, he and his family, including his parents and five siblings, crossed the Texas/Mexico border without visas and travelled about 40 miles north to Mission, Texas, just on the US side of the border.

As a young student, Joaquin studied very hard. His parents taught him about the American Dream -- if he studied and worked hard enough, he could achieve the American Dream!

As Joaquin grew older, he heard all of the hate-filled rhetoric by the Republican Tea Partiers and he grew more and more concerned about not having a social security number. He became afraid that due to these Hate Mongers, he would never find a job. Joaquin talked about this often with his brothers and sisters, and often cried at night, realizing that even if he gained a good college education, he would never be able to find a decent job or be able to support a family of his own.

Joaquin followed the news and politics very closely. He read newspapers detailing all of the angry talk and hate filled rhetoric by the Republican Tea Party members and by Republican politicians like TX Senator John Cornyn who spewed his Hate Talk to defeat the Dream Act. He also read about the Hate Bills like sb1070 in Arizona and the Georgia and Alabama Hate Bills that passed harsh immigration laws that racially profiled ALL Latinos!

Joaquin's brother Carlos Mendoza said, "Joaquin became very sad. He said the people passing these laws had no heart! How could they leave so many kids without parents and destroy so many lives?"

Last year, when the Dream Act failed to pass the US senate, Joaquin's heart became saddened. Carlos said, "Joaquin got depressed real bad. Every one of us, we all get depressed. Some of us can handle it, some of us can't. Joaquin couldn't."

Last Friday, all of the Hate Filled rhetoric surrounding the Immigration debate became too much for young Joaquin. Early in the morning, Joaquin put on his best Sunday Suit, white shirt and black skinny tie, the same outfit he wore every Sunday without fail to the Pan de Vida church in downtown Mission, Texas. As his brother Carlos put it: "Joaquin dressed himself to go to God."

Then Joaquin went into the bathroom, into the shower, then shot himself.

Joaquin left behind a note that explained why he ended his young, promising life. Joaquin spoke of his desperation at the Hate Filled WALL blocking out his future and preventing him from attaining his Dreams.

A wall reserved for the undocumented Latino immigrants in America.

PROOF: Alabama Immigration Law is RACIST Against Latino Legal Citizens!

When Alabama's sweeping new immigration law went into effect last month, Birmingham business owner Steve Dubrinsky realized he had a serious problem. Dubrinsky runs Max's Delicatessen, a classic Jewish deli, in the city's Inverness neighborhood. In the kitchen he employs several Latino workers, all of whom, he says, provided the necessary documentation when he hired them, and none of whom have given him reason to believe they're in Alabama illegally.

And yet several of them have told Dubrinsky to start looking for replacements. Even though his employees say they're here legally, they've told him they either have undocumented relatives who they must leave with, or they simply no longer feel comfortable as Latinos in Alabama. The new law authorizes police to demand documentation if they have "reasonable suspicion" someone is in the country illegally.

Dubrinksy was so concerned about his burgeoning staff problem that he spoke to the Birmingham News about it last week. "They are scared and I can't blame them," he told the paper, speaking about his documented employees. "It is affecting a lot of restaurants. It's a mess." Suddenly, Dubrinsky had much greater problems.

The morning the article ran, Dubrinsky hopped in his car and turned on local talk radio, only to discover that the discussion topic was Dubrinsky himself. The host and his guests were trying to decide whether or not they should boycott the deli. Dubrinsky grabbed his paper and read the Birmingham News article just to make sure he hadn't been misquoted, perhaps voicing support for undocumented immigrants. Indeed, he was quoted accurately, showing sympathy for the area's properly documented workers.

It hardly mattered. Dubrinsky was being tarred as an illegal-immigrant lover. "People twisted what the story said," Dubrinsky told HuffPost. "I was under attack." The article had been shared on an anti-immigrant website, and Dubrinsky was soon bombarded with vitriolic hate email. One reads: "well u can bet your ass that i will never eat in your resturant agian and will tell everybody i know what kind of person you are for suporting those dam wetback that are ruining our country."
Another: "if you cant keep the doors open and employ legal people then it is time to close."
And another: "I hope your unamerican establishment closes down!!!!"

The assault on Dubrinsky and his restaurant shows just how risky it can be for a business owner to publicly stake out even a moderate position in Alabama's immigration debate. Dubrinsky's wife happens to be a U.S. citizen from Mexico, and he says he never imagined he could be attacked for supporting the Latinos who, like her, have every right to be in the country. The nastiness of the past week has left him shocked and saddened.
"This hatred being spewed anonymously," he says, "it's very scary."

Just as bad as the hate mail was the hit to his restaurant's reputation online. After the article ran, Google was quickly flooded with negative reviews of Max's Deli from people, many who had probably never eaten there. By Dubrinsky's count, it was more than 70 reviews in two days, and they all remain on the web today. His loyal customers tried to chime in with positive words, but they were drowned out in a chorus of hate from first-time reviewers, dropping his rating to 1.5 stars out of 5. One recent review reads, "You could not pay me to patronize this place!" "Not one American worker in the place. Move your Deli to Mexico," read another by a reviewer who was only identified as Cherie. "Food is marginal at best. Employs only Illegal immigrants. Owner and entire staff are rude. Don't go here!!!" reads a third review, which, like many of the recent reviews, came from first-time reviewers.

(The vicious reviews stood in stark contract to the reputation of Max's Deli at Urbanspoon.com, the popular foodie site, where registered users have given the restaurant an enviable 81 percent rating out of 49 reviews.)

Not all of the hatred has poured in from out-of-state. Last Wednesday, many businesses were closed as Latinos skipped work to protest the new law, which is the harshest of its kind in the country. Dubrinsky convinced his workers to come in for the day, though he decided to shut down early -- at 5 p.m., as opposed to the typical 8:30 p.m. -- in a show of solidarity with his staff. He hung a sign on his door explaining his compromise.
He was pilloried for the early closing, too, receiving more hate emails -- emails that, sadly, could have come only from his fellow residents who noticed the sign.

Dubrinsky has remained remarkably diplomatic through it all. After receiving a nasty email from a woman he didn't know, Dubrinsky wrote an email back to her, sending her a link to the story and explaining his side of things. They had a little back-and-forth, and the woman ended up apologizing and asking him for forgiveness. When he received a nasty phone call from a stranger in Michigan, Dubrinsky tried to explain himself rather than simply hang up. But the woman couldn't be reasoned with.

Regardless of what happens to his reputation, Dubrinsky says he's worried about losing longtime staffers who he describes as good workers as well as good people. "They're like family to me," he says. Despite a national unemployment rate above 9 percent, he says that finding non-Latino workers willing to toil in his hot kitchen for modest pay has not been easy, just as many farmers are having a hard time finding non-Latino workers willing to pick their fields.

"It's easier said than done," says Dubrinsky. To prepare for his vacancies, Dubrinsky offered a job to a woman at $8.25 per hour a couple of weeks ago. After initially accepting, she called back to say she couldn't take it because she'd lose her food stamps and government-funded health care. More recently, Dubrinsky hired a man to work the grill in the kitchen. He showed up on Sunday but didn't last long. Dubrinsky says the man disappeared after just two hours, leaving only an apron in his place.

Around 7:15 a.m. Monday, a Caucasian woman approached a 50-year-old Latino worker cleaning a brick planter bench area in downtown Huntington Beach and yelled racial slurs and profanities at him, including, "I fucking hate you beaners!" She then punched the Latino without provocation, causing his lip to swell. They did not know one another before the encounter.

Surf City police who responded to the scene arrested a woman identified as Jennifer Renee Vanveldhuizen, 36, of San Diego. The OCDA has charged her with one felony count of hate crime battery causing injury, which could lead to a maximum sentence of three years in state prison if she is convicted.

Vanveldhuizen has an amazing resemblance to convicted Minutewoman Murderer Shawna Forde.

Hate Crimes Against Latinos Increase by 46.9% in San Diego County!

NC Times reports: The number of hate crimes in San Diego County increased last year compared with the previous year, bucking a statewide trend, according to a report issued by the state attorney general's office. While hate crimes against Jews, blacks and gays decreased statewide from 2009 to 2010, the number of hate crimes against Latinos increased 46.9 percent, from 81 in 2009 to 119 in 2010, according to the state's report, released last week.

By law, a hate crime involves any criminal act based on a person's race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity or national origin or disabilities. In North County cities, the number of hate crimes also increased, from 25 in 2009 to 41 in 2010, according to the state's "Hate Crime in California: 2010" report...

..Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, said.."San Diego is a border county and so the issues related to the debate over immigration are going to be hotter than in most other parts of the state." ..The number of hate crimes in the county appear to be inching up over the past several years, from 119 in 2007 to 136 in 2010, according to the state...
Attorney General Kamala Harris said that though hate crimes are aimed at specific groups of people, they affect everyone. "A crime that is motivated by hate is a crime against all people," Harris said in a written statement. "We will monitor and prosecute these crimes to the fullest extent of the law."

..Levin also cautioned that the actual number of hate crimes may be underreported throughout the state because of budget cuts in local police departments. He said some police departments may be losing personnel who keep track of these numbers and help victims report hate crimes.
