Here we go again!! Last month, I wrote about a "White Power" - Spanish Class incident. This month, a little Hispanic Legal child whose family immigrated from Honduras was talking to her friend, non-chalantly in Spanish and a paranoid schoolmate beats her up and scars her face.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Turner School District and police are investigating whether a conversation in Spanish led to the beating of a 15-year-old girl. Susan Borjas said she spoke Spanish to a friend on a school bus on Thursday. Susan said she was threatened and then attacked by a girl she didn't know. "She started screaming at me, saying, why am I speaking Spanish?" Susan told KMBC's Maria Antonia.
Are these people being Carefully Taught by their parents? (What a coincindence she shares the same last name as Prof Borjas. Maybe they are related. What do you say Prof Borjas?)
This is why the Official English bill will NOT pass. Too many people will misunderstand and beat up people who have these very innocent chats with their friends. We need to stop teaching all of this anger.

A few isolated incidents will not stop this bill from passing nor should it. Are English speakers being beat up in Mexico for speaking English because their official language is Spanish?
We have the right to claim part of our heritage in this country as "official" and it will save us a lot of tax dollars not having to print government documents in many other languages. Odd, that it is mostly those who are pro-illegal that object to us having an official language. The agenda becomes clearer every day.
"This month, a little Hispanic Legal child whose family immigrated from Honduras was talking to her friend, non-chalantly in Spanish and a paranoid schoolmate beats her up and scars her face."
First lets correct your opening argument, shall we...
The little girl is 15 years old, her father and herself are from Honduras as her father migrated legally after marrying an American citizen. The girl is a legal resident, since 2005, what do you know... they migrated the right way, so it can be done, no more excuses for the 'Illegal' others!!!
About the scarring of her face.... looks and appears to be bruising only, and is stated as bruising in the video, though I do realize scarring is much more beneficial for creating your argument. Nothing like a little embellishment??
It is possible that the girl who hit yelled at her did not understand what she was saying to the friend and was possibly wrong in thinking she was talking bad about her, as Samantha stated in the video. The girl who yelled and hit her, should be charged for assault, there was a much better way of handling the situation, she should have just asked her, friendly, what she was saying if she didn't understand, who knows they may have ended up as friends afterwards.
It is possible the child learned the actions from the parents, but it is also possible that she is the school bully. So to blame the parents for her actions is a little over reaching until further information is discovered if at all.
Pat,
In answer to your question.No.I have never seen any news reports that has said Mexican citizens have ever, ever been attacked for speaking English. In fact, I think they press 2 for English and take this as normal. (in our Global economy) Most of their society and much of Europe and the world is bi-lingual with English as the 2nd language.
Actually, this is precisely why Official English should pass, if everybody spoke the same language the assault would never have happened.
Liquid, I am glad you are not outright defending the abuser.
I´m a little surprised you are objecting to calling a 15 year old child a little girl when you were not opposed to calling the 26 year olds from Duke "boys."
As in the "White Power" high school cases, the recipients of the terror threats were legally here. This has nothing to do with illegal anything. It has to do with Legals speaking Spanish in private or in a Spanish class.
I am glad you see the error in the abusers actions.
Actually the 'boys' you are referring to were the ones that incited the rights in LA by throwing bottles at the police officers. The Duke case I called the La Cross Team.
By the way Liquid. I know you and I enjoy debating each other.
I am thinking about getting someone to sponsor a National conference call so someone from the PRO side (me) can debate someone on the ANTI side (you?) and people can dial in anonymously to listen to the debate.
Are you willing to be the ANTI voice?
If so, I will try to find someone who will fund the call and provide a neutral moderator and at the same time provide a live chat for callers to submit questions.
Logistics: 800 toll free dial in call.
Time:7 - 8 pm central
Night: Wed or Thursday sometime in October or November
Needed: You, Me, Moderator, Dial in Number, Live Chat forum for questions
What do you think? Would this call be a good forum? Do you have anyone who might be willing to fund this or help fund it? Let me know.
You can email me at dee_perezscott@yahoo.com if you are interested.
BTW, I found a free Live Chat site so that part will be free.
I prefer typing, too much going on in my ear with 2 babies 24 hours a day, I am Daddy Day Care with them.
That´s too bad Liquid. I have so much fun debating you! It would have been fun to do it live!
Good Luck with your babies. There is something very wonderful about a man that cares so much about his babies!! (even though we disagree with other issues). I feel the same way about someone who Loves his Mother!!
dee, well you just blew your own theory then. As in the example of Mexico, you yourself admit that if one chooses to speak English there even though Mexico's official language is Spanish, there is no notable violence over it. So there would be no reason to believe that if English were made the official language of the USA that any widespread violence would occur here either if someone chose to speak another language in public. You just blew holes in your own assinine arugment.
Pat, This article is proof there would be even worse violence if Official English were enacted. There is violence with just the recommendation.
I guess we should put the Jena 6 in this discussion. I asked NBC news how come they didn't emphasize the fact the fight was 6:1. I also asked why they didn't show the victim with his "bruises" in a hospital bed. They finally did the latter.
So people get bruises from time to time for various reasons. I generally find most objectionable the fact that in the case of the Jena 6 they felt like they had to gang up on one guy. I guess there is no such thing as a fair fight anymore.
Whoever bruised the Honduran girl should be punished to reflect the degree of her injuries. The Jena 6 should also be punished.
Regarding Official English, I believe passage of such a bill would reduce the incidents of attacks on foreign language speakers. There should be none of that. But you can bet some of it is generated by the volume of illegal immigration and the talk at the dinner table about that subject. Many people are very incensed about the failure of our government and Mexico's to control illegal immigration and to deal effectively with all the illegals who are here.
By the way Liquid. Did you see the related article about the young boy who was suspended for saying "No ProblemoNo Problemo" ? More of the same type of stuff but this happened a couple of years ago. Yikes!!
Hmmm. The Jena 6. Nooses hanging from trees to intimidate. Trees reserved for the elite pale ones. Racial Tensions. Hmmmm. This reminds me of times past. Not good memories. People have to stop thinking upper class, lower class due to color or ethnicity. That is the root of both incidents.
Like Rodney King said, "Can´t we all just get along?"
dee, you are being ridiculous by assuming that a couple of isolated incidents like you described would accelerate into widespread violence if English were made the official langauge. You completely overlook the fact that this doesn't happen in Mexico when someone speaks English there. Or do you think that Mexicans are more tolerant and nicer than Americans?
How can you make a statement that they learned it from their parents without any proof whatsover? I smell a race card in your pocket, especially against White people.
Nothing like making it about race (Jena 6), Wikipedia's run down
And a news article with the facts - Black and white becomes gray in La. town
The boys that hung the 2 noose should have been expelled for inciting fear, the '6' happened 3 months later in a different matter all together, it was Bell v. Barker, Barker out in one punch, Bells friends came around corner and started kicking Barker, further injuring him. The '6' should be held accountable for assault, all but Bell are over 17, however Bell had 2 prior charges and was on Parole, fighting is in violation of parole, he should be jailed, he is sitting where he should be, behind bars.
The issue is stated well in the wiki link you provided:
Background
According to National Public Radio, racial tensions in Jena were at high levels prior to the Jena Six incident due to a number of racially charged events in the small town.[5]
The "white tree" incident
At Jena High School, about 10% of enrolled students are African Americans and more than 85% are white. Early reporting asserted that students of different races seldom sat together, although this has been disputed.[6] According to early reports, black students typically sat on bleachers near the auditorium, while white students sat under a large tree, referred to as the "white tree" or "prep tree", in the center of the school courtyard.[5] On September 22, 2007, however, the Associated Press reported that, according to teachers and administrators at the school, the tree in question wasn't a "white tree", as students of all races had sat under it at one time or another.[6]
During a school assembly on August 31, 2006, a black male freshman student asked permission from the principal to sit under the "white tree".[7] According to the recounting of events given by U.S. Attorney Donald Washington, a Bush appointee who is himself black,[8], the question was posed in a "jocular fashion".[9] The principal told the students they could "sit wherever they wanted."[7] The freshman and his friends then sat under the tree.[10]
The following morning, nooses were discovered hanging from the tree. Reports differ whether there were three[5] — believed by some to be code for the Ku Klux Klan[6] — or two.[6] It has been reported that Jena's principal learned that three white students were responsible and recommended expulsion, that the board of education overruled his recommendation, and that Superintendent Roy Breithaupt agreed with the overruling. It was initially reported that the punishment was reduced to three days of in-school suspension.[5][11] According to the Associated Press, however, the three students were isolated at an alternative school for a month, and then spent two weeks on in-school suspension.[6]
dee, racism still exists in the U.S. and it always will. The more diversified a nation is the more you will see these divisions along racial lines. It is just a fact of life and human nature. I surmise from your remarks though that you just recognize White racism while dispelling racism from other racial groups.
It is not unusual for like races and ethnic groups to congregate together and exclude others. I have seen it myself many times. People are divided by culture, race and language. They feel more comfortable with their own kind. I don't necessarily think that is racism though unless any group feels superior to another.
Anyone who thinks that things are otherwise is looking at the world through rose colored glasses. Myself, I choose to deal in reality.
_The so-called "white tree" at Jena High, often reported to be the domain of only white students, was nothing of the sort, according to teachers and school administrators; students of all races, they say, congregated under it at one time or another.
_Two nooses — not three — were found dangling from the tree. Beyond being offensive to blacks, the nooses were cut down because black and white students "were playing with them, pulling on them, jump-swinging from them, and putting their heads through them," according to a black teacher who witnessed the scene.
_There was no connection between the September noose incident and December attack, according to Donald Washington, an attorney for the U.S. Justice Department in western Louisiana, who investigated claims that these events might be race-related hate crimes.
_The three youths accused of hanging the nooses were not suspended for just three days — they were isolated at an alternative school for about a month, and then given an in-school suspension for two weeks.
_The six-member jury that convicted Bell was, indeed, all white. However, only one in 10 people in LaSalle Parish is African American, and though black residents were selected randomly by computer and summoned for jury selection, none showed up.
You are basing your whole racial claim on seeing the words "white tree".
Barker had mocked Robert Bailey, Jr., who had allegedly been beaten up by a white man the previous Friday.
Later that day Bell attacked Barker from behind and knocked him down and out, then the 5 others came and started attacking him as well.
If Bell was a decent person he would have confronted Barker and called him out versus attacking him from behind, that, to me, is chicken sh*t of Bell, and then for the rest to come and attack Barker after he was already jumped, well that tells me they are just as chicken sh*t. If boys want to fight then do it face to face and except who wins, Bell and his boys should have been charged with the crimes they were charged with, and Bell is sitting where he should be sitting, in JAIL.
From the AP Article said about the racial climate in Jena:
Anthony Jackson, one of Jena High's two black teachers said, "I know some people who tried to stay here and couldn't get good jobs. There was, for instance, a gentleman who graduated as a certified biology teacher, but he left because he didn't want to deal with what's going on here."
Cleveland Riser, 75, who began working in Jena as a teacher and then rose to become an assistant superintendent of schools in LaSalle Parish, says blacks have long had trouble getting ahead in Jena.
"In my experience, the opportunity for advancing in my profession was denied, in my opinion, because I was black — not because I was unprepared professionally, or because of my performance."
Here and across the "crossroads" of Louisiana, there are Klan supporters, to be sure; David Duke, the former KKK Grand Wizard, carried LaSalle Parish in his 1991 run for state governor. And Jacqueline Hatcher, a 59-year-old African American, remembers when, as a ninth grader in 1962, she saw a large cross burning out front of the all-black Good Pine High School.
"We heard the Klan was meeting in the woods because there was going to be desegregation in the schools and they didn't want that," says Hatcher. Still, no one recalls seeing any public lynchings or whites in robes and masks for a half century.
Pat, I agree with your statement: "racism still exists in the U.S. and it always will."
I grew up during the Civil Rights Movement and I was hoping that much of this type of behavior was all behind us. It seems like it was for a while. At least it was very hidden.Over the last several years, many of the hate groups are thriving. I think it is partially due to 9-11 and the rest due to the internet, the media, and groups that endorse this type of behavior.
I also agree with your statement "It is not unusual for like races and ethnic groups to congregate together and exclude others." I think this is largely due to fear and ignorance by each separate group.
I see multiculturalism growing and thriving. I see this every week at our neighborhood bowling center. We have to stop fearing each other and banding together as neighbors and as friends.
Yes, racism does still exist and always will but why do you just point out White racism? There is racism that exists in all races. In fact Whites were more racist back in the Civil Rights Era but from what I have seen non-Whites are just as racist as Whites or more nowadays.
Your multi-culterism kumbaya is what is creating racism. When too much diversity is forced on a country or community, racism and segregation is what occurs. And that is because it is human nature to want to be around those that are ethnically like you that you can identify with and not those who are unlike you.
You are looking at the world through rose colored glasses. That is not reality. What you see as kumbaya is actually only forced tolerance for the most part because we live in a PC country now. I have nothing against others myself but I am also realistic in my views and thinking about human nature and I except it for what it is, you don't. You will always see it as racism when it is not.
Liquid, I should give you the url of the discussion board I am playing on today. These young college kids are all just falling all over themselves trying to debate me. I´m not telling you the url because I know you will go over and try to turn the tide.
I almost feel sorry for them. They are students of a major university out east. That is all the clue I will give you.
Wait. I will give you one more clue. The topic is diversity.
Pat, I agree with your statement "forced tolerance for the most part because we live in a PC country now." Too many people are forcing it to be politically correct, not because they mean it. I think this is very evident in the news coverage we are seeing in the Jena 6 case.
I wish we could all be equal and we all could get along.
When you observe minority racism, it is more often minority reaction to racism and sometimes these actions are worse than the initial event. Minorities seek to be equal and accepted. When there is racism or even perceived racism against them there is a reaction. This is what you see and feel and react to, plain and simple.
Well you sure can't win any debates with adults so now you are trying kids? Good luck with that.
Are you watching 'The War' or reading the blogs on it, Hispanics are upset, protesting in front of the PBS building in LA. Was this Joel Rios big Surprise he talked about?
Why, you don't want to give the kids a chance? C'mon post a link. I'll be nice.
On BlueLatinos, joel is complaining they only got 28 minutes of 14 hours. Will he ever be satisfied?
I posted this link there. Maybe some will come over.
Pat, They are not that young over there. Some are. I was just teasing Liquid.
Liquid, Yes. Joel was upset about the limited coverage considering the rate of Hispanics in wars. Even the few minutes shown were added After the number of complaints by various groups.
I agree with you in one regard. The War is an excellent series and it does honor one of our countries best assetts, our young people who serve our country.
That was a nice story about the young soldier who met the girl of his dreams.
Here is the story now about the Jens 6, more unraveled truth about the racism brought out by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Jena 6 case caught up in whirlwind of distortion, opportunism
All brought about by a Lawyer from another town??~!! Seems the DA was correct the whole time!! Nothing about the nooses or racism, just school kids taunting each other and the chicken sh*t assault from behind by Bell.
