The Jewish Post reports: "Asian-Americans, the New Jews" in America!

I came across this interesting article in the Jewish Post. It is the type of article that makes you go hmmmm. The Jewish writer indicates:
. 17M Asians in the U.S.
. Asian Immigrants to America are welcomed by US Immigration Dept., provided the preferred immigration status
. 44% obtain college degrees which is double other Americans
. Like Jews, Asians keep to their own ethnic group
. Like Jews, Asians speak a different language at home and keep English as a 2nd language
. Different then Jews, Asians continue to be viewed as "foreigners" by White Americans. (welcomed by ICE but NOT White Americans??)
'They" are taking over - overrunning American college campuses. "They" are concentrated in selective universities. "They" are a homogenous group, uniform in educational and financial achievement and culture.
Once upon a time in the not-so-distant past, these were the stereotypes, the myths, the canards about Jews, who were subjected to unofficial quotas that limited their access to some of the finest American universities and employment prospects. These days, the "they" against whom such charges are leveled are Asian Americans. They are smart, determined, committed to education and advancement. This hardly sounds like a bad thing. They sound like Jews.
Asian Americans are a "model minority," except that they are not. There are an estimated 17 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the US...The composition of the Asian American population - like that of the Jewish community - reflects conditions in their former homelands and immigration opportunities. Some came to the US as refugees and laborers. Others arrived under recent American immigration policies that wooed financial stars and the highly educated who could fill significant economic or professional roles. The so-called preference category accounts for nearly 18 percent of the immigrants from Asia who arrived in the 1990s; they were the elites. DESPITE THE vast differences among them, Asian Americans tend to be lumped together in the eyes of the majority population. "They are all seen as the same studious, self-sufficient high achievers," according to a report issued June 9 that argues that the stereotypes and myths obscure the educational realities and the needs of Asian Americans...Some of the claims and quips are mean-spirited and painful. "UCLA really stands for 'United Caucasians Lost Among Asians'," the report said. Ouch.
Some are laughable - unless they are directed at your group. The report debunks the myth that these students only pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and math, also known as "STEM." What a surprise: as they are not monolithic in national origin, language and culture, they are not single-minded in their interests. A large proportion of Asian Americans seek degrees in the social sciences and the humanities...
. 44 percent of Asian Americans obtain college degrees - which is almost doubt the American average
. Language. A very high proportion of Asian American students - 79 percent - speak a language other than standard English at home. The rate of English proficiency for the group is high, but varies by ethnic group.
. But as a group, the Asians also suffer a racial stigma that Jews no longer face. "In this day and age, Asians are not seen as white, nor are they seen as Americans," Tchen says. "They are cast into this odd position of being perpetual foreigners in the US."

The only good point to make about racism and racial profiling is that is seems to lessen every generation or so in the USofA. We are on the verge of having our 1st black president. Would we be able to say that 1 to 2 generations ago? (no chance) Just like saying would we allow asian american immigrants 2 generations ago? (no chance)

That's funny, I read the whole article and no where in that article was it stated that Asians were viewed as foreigners by "WHITE AMERICANS". It just stated that they were viewed as foreigners. No particular race of Americans was mentioned. It didn't mention ICE either. Why would it? ICE enforces our immigration laws, they are not a welcoming party for new immigrants. Where did it say that that Asians are not welcomed by "WHITE AMERICANS" or where in the article was this even posed as a question?

WOW, that youtube video, "Why Hilary Lost." Just goes to show you how much guys act like pigs and act unprofessional even on LIVE TV. But it did hit the nail right on the head. I was pulling for her but somehow deep down knew her chances were slim and none. Not because of her ability, but our sexist views

Here you go Pat.
Perhaps you missed it.

"But as a group, the Asians also suffer a racial stigma that Jews no longer face. "In this day and age, Asians are not seen as WHITE, NOR are they seen as Americans," Tchen says. "THEY are CAST into this ODD position of being PERPETUAL FOREIGNERS in the US."

Dee said...

Anon1,
You are right. That Hillary YouTube does say it all!!
The media (esp Drudge and MSNBC) did do a "job" on Hillary! Their mysogyny was despicable!!

Anonymous said...

Where was this statement made in the article? It said nothing about "White Americans" viewing Asians as foreingers! Where was the statement about ICE?

"Different then Jews, Asians continue to be viewed as "foreigners" by White Americans. (welcomed by ICE but NOT White Americans??)"

Dee said...

Pat,
READ IT AGAIN!!

IT SAYS:

"But as a group, the Asians also suffer a racial stigma that Jews no longer face. "In this day and age, Asians are not seen as WHITE, NOR are they seen as Americans," Tchen says. "THEY are CAST into this ODD position of being PERPETUAL FOREIGNERS in the US."

READ IT. LAST Paragraph!!

How did you come up with this:
"Asian Immigrants to America are welcomed by US Immigration Dept., provided the preferred immigration status"

From this?:
Some came to the US as refugees and laborers. Others arrived under recent American immigration policies that wooed financial stars and the highly educated who could fill significant economic or professional roles. The so-called preference category accounts for nearly 18 percent of the immigrants from Asia who arrived in the 1990s; they were the elites.

or

This:
"Different then Jews, Asians continue to be viewed as "foreigners" by White Americans. (welcomed by ICE but NOT White Americans??)"

from this?:
DESPITE THE vast differences among them, Asian Americans tend to be lumped together in the eyes of the majority population.

So to answer your question: "welcomed by ICE but NOT White Americans??" They are welcomed as "Immigrants" by all Americans.

Liquid,

From this:
Asians "preference category"

and

"But as a group, the Asians also suffer a racial stigma that Jews no longer face. "In this day and age, Asians are not seen as WHITE, NOR are they seen as Americans," Tchen says. "THEY are CAST into this ODD position of being PERPETUAL FOREIGNERS in the US."

All in the article.

Read the article and the intent of the article.

The Jewish Post reported this and titled it: "Asian-Americans, the New Jews" (in America)

Sorry you are having difficulty interpreting this article. It is very clear.

Dee said...

And understand the term "wooed" in partnership with "preferential". It is very clear!

Dee said...

You know you could not use either term, "wooed" or "preferential category" for Latinos.

Anonymous said...

Isn't "wooing" what Bill Gates is trying to do with the H-1B Visas you so desperately believe we need? Weren't you for the wooing? You are also aware of the visas that are granted to persons of foreign nationalities that if they invest so much money into our economy by starting a business, they are granted LPR and/or GC's. You discussed this before, surely you haven't forgotten about it, have you?

I did read the article, it's nothing more than an opinion piece. hence the:JPost.com » Opinion » Columnists » Article.

Your interpretation of the last paragraph is in question, I interpret the last paragraph, in fact the entire piece differently than you. There are no difficulties on my part.

In fact, one could. You need to go back and review the categories of visa types, then return, noting the amount of Latin@'s using these special types of visas vs. how many visas go unused. Maybe then it will be clear to you!

Where did this statement come from?

Different then Jews, Asians continue to be viewed as "foreigners" by White Americans. (welcomed by ICE but NOT White Americans??)

Where in the ORIGINAL article did it say that Asians continue to be viewed as "foreigners" by WHITE AMERICANS? Where was the reference to ICE in the ORIGINAL article? It isn't there!

It said that the Asians aren't viewed as white but it didn't say anything about it being the opinion of WHITE AMERICANS. Also, where is the reference to ICE in the ORIGINAL article?

Dee said...

As I said Pat,
Both these terms are in the article pertaining to Asians:
"wooed" or "preferential category"

The Immigration Dept provides the "Preferential Category" for Asian immigrants and "Woos" them as the article states. I said ICE vs spelling out this acronmym for this Immigration group.

You know you could not use either term, "wooed" or "preferential category" for Latinos.

YET, even though they are preferred status by Immigration Dept, as the last statement says, "But as a group, the Asians also suffer a racial stigma that Jews no longer face. "In this day and age, Asians are not seen as white, nor are they seen as Americans," Tchen says. "They are cast into this odd position of being perpetual foreigners in the US."
Who do you think views them as foreigners and non-whites?
Re Read the article and try to understand the intent!

Dee said...

I think this article tells the truth! Asians are viewed by many as a "preferred" immigration group. They, like middle Easterners have learned that Education is critical. Their rate of 44% college educated is outstanding.

I think more and more Latinos know and understand the importance of education and obtaining a degree.

Dee said...

The mindset we have to change for both Latino and Asian citizens is:
"In this day and age, American Asians (and American Latinos) are not seen as white, nor are they seen as Americans," Tchen says. "They are cast into this odd position of being perpetual foreigners in the US."

This mindset MUST change!! We ARE Americans!!

This statement NOT made in the actual article.

"Different then Jews, Asians continue to be viewed as "foreigners" by White Americans. (welcomed by ICE but NOT White Americans"??)

I ask again where in the article did it state that only WHITE AMERICANS see them this way? Are you trying to claim that Latinos and Blacks don't also see them this way at times?

Where was ICE even mentioned in the article?

It was an attempt (but not by the writer of the article) to demonize WHITE AMERICANS yet again and try to claim that non-Asian minorities in this country are all accepting of everyone. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Anonymous said...

To make a blanket statement that Asian-Americans and Hispanic-Americans are viewed by the MAJORITY of White Americans as not being American is a flat out lie and is a hateful statement to make about White-Americans. There is no truth in it. Some White-Americans may feel that way but not the majority. I am sure that some Hispanic Americans and Black Americans view Asians in the same way but we wouldn't want to talk about that, now would we?

Anonymous said...

One other point to make about this is that I am sure at first glance and without knowing the status of a White person in China for example, an Asian citizen would probably think "tourist" right away. It would only be natural because the number of White people who are citizens of China are only a small minority just as the number of Asians that are citizens of this country are in the minority numbers.

After learning that an Asian person is indeed a citizen of this country, they aren't thought of as a foreigner anymore. It is all about knowing a person's citizenship status in this country. So what is the point trying to be made here?

Anonymous said...

Dee is confounding the opinion piece into a racial argument. Her statement of: You know you could not use either term, "wooed" or "preferential category" for Latinos.

Yet I pointed her into the direction of examining the visa categories and seeing how many go unused by the Hispanics who actually do get "preferential" treatment. NAFTA Visa comes to mind, or the wooing visa, which was discussed here just a few weeks ago, "Citizenship For Sale...to the Highest Bidder!", the EB Category.

Dee said...

Pat,
Maybe you finally got it!
We are a multi ethnic country and minority citizens are Proud to be Americans and welcome and acknowledge other minority citizens as well.

Dee said...

Liquid,
You confound yourself.
How many ´preferred´visas did Agriprocessors offer to the 300 Guatemalans they provided fake papers to?
None.

Anonymous said...

You are now confusing the H-2B visa category with the EB and the TN visa categories. You have changed the argument. Your lack of understanding what you are saying is rather ignorant on your behalf. Understand your own argument before you confuse yourself too much.

Agriprocessors Runs Help Wanted Ads In Guatemala Newspapers

So you see, Agriprocessors did "woo" the Guatemalans who had work permits to allow them to work in the USA. "Preferred" was it not that they ran the ad in a Guatemalan newspaper?

Dee said...

Liquid,
Often, you unknowingly reiterate points for me.
I have said quite frequently Agriprocessors recruited the Guatemalans in Guatemala. They solicited, hired and brought them here and exploited them.
They enticed them with the ad. What is clear is, those 300 Guatemalans who were cow barned DID NOT have Visas, even though they were PROMISED preferred visas in the Ad.

Agriprocessors is perhaps the most heinous of all exploiting employers. To bring him up as an example for your side is actually quite ridiculous.

Here is more about Agriprocessors from the failed messiah link you provided:

"What Rubashkin Knew And When He Knew It
I reread a large chunk of Stephen Bloom's book Postville over the second day of Shavuot. I hadn't looked at the book in a long time – I think I last read bits of it five years ago.

Bloom clearly…

…shows that Aaron Rubashkin was directly and knowingly involved in recruiting, transporting and employing illegal workers, despite his recent claims to the contrary.

Bloom also reports sexual harassment of female illegal workers, forced sex, and other abuses.

Bloom reports the starting salary in 1997 was $6 per hour, with nothing taken out – meaning no Social Security or Income taxes withheld.

How could that be?

Because Agriprocessors was still refusing to comply with US law mandating companies check workers documents and withhold taxes."

Anonymous said...

The ad did not promise preferred visas. The ad required the Guatemalans to have visas prior to coming and applying.

It is, by no means, to bring this up on "my side", ridiculous. We all agree Agriprocessors should be convicted and held responsible. The point I was making was that of your statement: You know you could not use either term, "wooed" or "preferential category" for Latinos. When I clearly showed: So you see, Agriprocessors did "woo" the Guatemalans who had work permits to allow them to work in the USA. "Preferred" was it not that they ran the ad in a Guatemalan newspaper? I also pointed to the TN and EB visas, which you have yet to indulge.

We all agree on Agriprocessors. Craig @ projectusa did a great write up of it, for which you agreed. Yet just the other day you stated to Patriot that the ANTI side was not wanting employers punished, not one ANTI site, go figure, ProjectUSA, an ANTI site.
