Sheriff Arpaio Takes On President Obama and AG Eric Holder! Oh My!

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says "I´m Not Stopping!" and he plans to continue (Racial Profiling) crime sweeps and raids aimed at illegal immigrants and businesses that employ them regardless of any changes made by President Obama or A.G. Eric Holder.
The Phoenix Business Journal Reports:
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says scrutiny of racial and ethnic profiling by incoming President Barack Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will not deter his get-tough approach to illegal immigration.
“I’m not stopping,” said Arpaio. The Republican sheriff said he plans to continue crime sweeps and raids aimed at illegal immigrants and businesses that employ them. The Obama administration and Holder are expected to increase the focus on racial and ethnic profiling by police. Critics of Arpaio’s immigration enforcement argue the sheriff’s office targets Hispanics and such actions take away from more serious investigations. Arpaio said his immigration sweeps are nondiscriminatory and if people have complaints they can contact federal authorities. “Go ahead and take them to the FBI,” said Arpaio, who just won reelection to a fifth term. Arpaio said another immigration sweep will soon occur. The U.S. Justice Department under Obama is expected to put a greater focus on discrimination, corporate corruption and consumer protection cases compared with the Bush administration’s priorities in national security, child pornography, sex rings and immigration. Public opinion polls generally show support in Maricopa County for Arpaio’s get-tough policies.
There are an estimated 579,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona, most coming from Mexico, according to the Center for Immigration Studies. The U.S. recession and housing troubles have reduced the flow of migrants and sent some undocumented workers back to that country. Arizona also is a key entry point into the U.S. for drug traffickers and other smugglers as northern Mexico cities are besieged by drug cartels, which reach into the Phoenix area with gun purchases and other activity.

Meanwhile his deputies make veiled threats about the President!
The Phoenix New Times Blog reports:..Arizona ACORN director Monica Sandschafer on the porch of the dreaded Fourth Avenue Jail, moments after she had been released after spending a day in stir, she related the following. Seems she was checking out of the facility, when the deputy overseeing her paperwork struck up a political conversation with her, noting that, "You guys [ACORN members] are all for Obama." Sandschafer suggested that this was not a bad thing as Obama won the election, right? The deputy's response was right out of the Lee Harvey Oswald joke book. "He goes, `Oh, well, for a short time anyway...he (Obama) might suffer from the JFK syndrome,'" recounted Sandschafer. "And I said, `Well, let's hope not,'" Sandschafer told the deputy, who then went on to inform her that he'd voted for Bush three times, apparently referring to Bushes I and II.
Some in Maricopa county are calling Arpaio a cross between Bull Connor and Judge Roy Bean! If they add a dash of the Cowardly Lion, they might be right!!

The Sheriff did not say he was going to continue racial profiling because that is not what he deos. He has already been exhonerated of that. He said he was going to continue enforming the law ans well he should.

OMG! Joe Arpaio is one of the Worst People in the World. Every time I see his name in the news, I cringe. I can hardly bear to see who's human rights he's violating this time.

Of course he doesn't intend to start respecting human rights any time soon, just because we have a new Prez! That's not how Joe ticks. "If they're brown strike 'em down! If they're white they must be right!"

Anonymous calls his human rights abuses "enforcing the law". No law requires you to emasculate men by making them wear women's clothing. No law says that you may deny prisoners vital health care. No law empowers anyone to let prisoners die in their care. No law makes it legal to arrest journalists performing research.

From his wiki page:
"From 2004 through November 2007, Arpaio was the target of 2,150 lawsuits in U.S. District Court and hundreds more in Maricopa County courts; 50 times as many prison-conditions lawsuits as the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston jail systems combined.

...By mid-2007, more than $50 million in claims had been filed against the sheriff's office and Maricopa County."

Sounds like he's really doing some great things for the community!

Has Sheriff Joe ever been convicted of any of these charges? I rest my case.

Anon,
Arpaios heinous tactics have COST Maricopa County over $44 million. These are Settlements = GUILTY!!

"Arpaio's actions.. based.. more on demagoguery and grandstanding that does not serve the public welfare. Amnesty International issued a report critical of the treatment of inmates in Maricopa County facilities. The family members of inmates who have died in jail custody have filed lawsuits against the sheriff’s office. The lawsuits have COST Maricopa County more than $43 MILLION in SETTLEMENT CLAIMS during Arpaio's tenure."

Anon,
Arpaio has had numerous, numerous complaints of Racial Profiling. So have his deputies. Many Mayors and other officials have also charged him. So has the ACLU and other groups.
Unfortunately, Arpaio has exonerated himself and his own men.
His abuses have COST the County over $40M dollars! Settlements = Guilty Verdicts. For now, just monetary. But Arpaios day WILL come and he will finally be held guilty to the fullest extent of the law!!
I am sure AG Holden will see to it!!

Anonymous said...

Lawsuits and settlements don't necessarily mean guilt. Sometimes it is easier and cheaper to make settlements than to fight an accusation. We have seem it happen numerous times with celebrities also. It is a shame when law enforcement are treated like common criminals by citizens or non-citizens who seek monetary gain with false accusations.

Anonymous said...

Just as a settlement does not prove guilt, Anonymous, nor does it prove innocence.

There is probably a reason why he is subject to more lawsuits than several major cities combined.

There is probably a reason why he is condemned by a variety of human rights organizations.

Either all of these organizations, and all of the people who are filing lawsuits are wrong, or he is wrong. Let's break out Ockham's razor and do a little thinking.

There's no reason to slavishly defend him simply because he's anti-immigrant. Some people go too far, plain and simple. Let a little nuance into your life!

Anonymous said...

Ah, but the law says you are innocent till proven guilty and he wasn't!

Yes, there are reasons he has been subjected to many lawsuits. Greed, and ethnocentric racism. I wouldn't give a plug nickel for the ACLU either. Those you call human rights organizations are a cover for either far left loonies or are illegal alien activists.

Your credibility was just shot down when you called him anti-"immigrant." He isn't, he is anti illega alien. Big difference!

Losing a lawsuit doesn't make anyone guilty....

Just shows that some are willing to award money based on feelings....

If I may:
Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $780,000 by a jury of
her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving little toddler was Ms. Robertson's son.

A 19-year-old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Mr. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

Terrence Dickson of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just finished robbing by way of the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up since the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation, and Mr. Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. He sued the homeowner's insurance claiming the situation had caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the tune of $500,000.

Jerry Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle.
The beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. The award was less than sought because the jury felt the dog might have been just a little provoked at the time by Mr. Williams who was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.

A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, $113,500 after she slipped on a soft drink and broke her coccyx (tailbone). The beverage was on the floor because Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

Kara Walton of Claymont, Delaware, successfully sued the owner of a night club in a neighboring city when she fell from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the window in the ladies room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was awarded $12,000 and dental expenses.

Mr. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mr. Grazinski purchased a brand new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On his first trip home (from an OU football game), having driven onto the freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back and make himself a cup of coffee. Not surprisingly, the R.V. left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mr. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him in the owner's manual that he couldn't actually do this. The jury awarded him $1,750,000 plus a new motor home.
The company actually changed their manuals on the basis of this suit, just in case there were any other complete morons buying their recreation vehicles.

In regard to the pink underwear from Wikipedia:

"One of Arpaio's most visible public relations successes was the introduction of pink underwear, which the Maricopa County Sheriff's website cites as being "world famous."[26] Arpaio has claimed that that traditional white underwear, labeled with Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, was being smuggled out of the jails and sold on the streets, and he thus had the underwear dyed pink, believing that pink is not considered a "macho" color, and would not be stolen."

So no, the male detainees are not wearing women's underwear as czech is claiming.

. said...

The pink boxers have become a bit of a collector's item. My Grandmother was apart of the Sheriff's posse, and had given me a signed pair some 12 years ago or so.

They're pretty simple really:
Standard pink boxers, MCSO logo on lower left leg.

So..... pink boxers is considered 'wearing women's clothing' and a human rights violation?

I can't understand why people stick up for thieves, drug addicts, and rapists.
I guess I'll never understand.

Some police officers and sheriffs are trying to replace the "Immigration and Naturalization Service", which is a Federal Office.

By doing so they cause fear and terror and these areas become like Sparta were the "hellots" or slaves were free game for hunting and training for the martial arts of the Spartan aristocracy. There were other "metecos" foreigners or visitors, but I do not know if the could be beaten or kicked to death like the hellots.

I would not call the immigrants second class citizens because they are not citizens and the "bean jumpers" think that they are below chimps, gorillas or orangutans, because the last are protected species.

The Big Apple has become a Clockwork Orange, and everyday we get ugly reports of New York City in these matters of Hate Crime.

The last report is that a perfect white citizen was confused or taken for being a black, due to a hood, the darkness or some tan in a beach.

And he was beaten with a baseball bat with grave brain injury, he is shaking terribly and is learning to speak once again. His memory is completely and permanently harmed.

The same thugs attacked with an Iron Pipe a South Asian, whose color they did not like.

In my first post I linked to the Wiki page where the information is available, and backed with supporting documents.

Read a little closer before tossing around accusations.

@Anon
The ACLU has defended human rights since it's inception. It doesn't matter the color of the person, or their nationality, they defend human rights, which you never deserve to lose, even if you commit a crime. Perhaps you do not like the fact that they treat undocumented immigrants as humans with rights, but that does not make the ACLU "looney".

If Arpaio was innocent in all of these lawsuits, why would he settle again and again and again? It's more than a stretch for you to point to countless settlements and say "See! Innocence!" Surely you realize that settling is a common way to avoid being found guilty in a court of law. Not all who settle are guilty, but when you have a record of settling like Arpaio, only slavish commitment to anyone who shares your anti-immigrant views would possibly allow you to see a person whose hands are clean.

"So..... pink boxers is considered 'wearing women's clothing' and a human rights violation?"

For real? Are you acting obtuse deliberately, or unwittingly?

And even though you don't define being forced to wear pink underwear as "women's underwear", because you are eager to present Mr. Arpaio in the most favorable light possible, what about the other crimes he has committed against inmates in his care? I listed them, but you could not refute them. You just quibbled about the definition of "women's underwear", which is a debate on the semantics of my claim, not the substance.

"Your credibility was just shot down when you called him anti-"immigrant." He isn't, he is anti illega alien. Big difference!"

His raids and treatment have harmed documented and undocumented immigrants alike. To pretend otherwise is just that... pretending. With some commenters here, calling for humane treatment of immigrants is all it takes to get your "credibility shot" or to be "looney".

"Just because someone dies in jail or prison or any other lockup facility, doesn't necessarily make it the fault of the jailor."

Correct, but when a certain facility is subject to an unusually high level of death, then we need to look at the reasons. That is, if we value life, even if it isn't white life. Why in the world would anyone, anti-immigrant or pro, argue that we should ignore a facility producing unusually high levels of immigrant death?

czeck, why are you posing questions and arguments to me about the Sheriff? Why don't you pose all of your questions to the authorities? He has been re-elected Sheriff 5 times! If or when he is arrested for these incidents or he is no longer popular with the voters in his jurisdiction, get back with me. Until then, all you have is your opinion.

From the wiki page:
Czech-Arapio

Charles Agster: "methamphetamine intoxication....he amount of methamphetamine in Agster's system as 17 times the known lethal dose."
0-1
Scott Norberg:
"Norberg did, however, have methamphetamine in his urine, proving that he had used the drug at some point fairly recently before his death."positional asphyxia". Sheriff Arpaio investigated and subsequently cleared detention officers of any criminal wrongdoing."
0-2
Brian Crenshaw*
"Brian Crenshaw was a blind inmate allegedly beaten into a coma by guards working under Arpaio. Crenshaw suffered injuries that included a perforated intestine and a broken neck."
*arrested for shoplifting
1-2
Richard Post
"Richard Post was a paraplegic inmate arrested in 1996 for possession of marijuana and criminal trespass.Because of his injuries, Post has lost much of the use of his arms."
2-2
Jeremy Flanders*
"In 1996, Jeremy Flanders was attacked by inmates at Tent City who used rebar tent stakes, which were not concreted into the ground.During the trial, the defendant "presented evidence that, among other things, the Sheriff and his deputies had actual knowledge that prisoners used rebar tent stakes and tent poles as weapons and did nothing to prevent it."
*was serving a yearlong sentence for four counts of burglary.
I give this one to both:
3-3
Ambria Renee Spencer
"In 2006, inmate Ambrett Spencer, who was incarcerated for drunk driving and was nine months pregnant with a healthy girl, complained of severe stomach pains and asked for medical attention. The infirmary nurse, who had no prenatal training, believed the pain was not an emergency. At the hospital -- four hours after first reporting pain -- Spencer gave birth to a dead daughter, Ambria Renee. It was determined that Spencer's pain had been caused by placental abruption"
However, the wiki listed Ambria Renee Spencer, who was not an inmate, and I'm sure that the mother's apparent alcohol binge had nothing to do with it....
3-4
Irish High Court extradition refusal
"Patrick Colleary was a Catholic Priest accused of molesting an altar boy in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1978. Facing two counts of felony sexual conduct with a minor, he fled to his native Ireland and fought extradition. An Irish High Court judge, Philip O'Sullivan, refused to extradite Colleary back to Arizona, writing in his decision that Arpaio "gloated over the inhumane treatment he dishes out to his inmates" and "appeared to take a chillingly sadistic pleasure in his role as incarcerator. It was the duty of any Irish court to see that no citizen was handed over to such a regime."
I'm not even sure if this one should be placed there, citing a foreign court's opinion based on the same flawed info.
