Breaking News: Obama Select Latina, Daughter of Migrants, as Secretary of Labor!

President elect Obama selected Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA) as Secretary of Labor! Ms. Solis is the daughter of two migrant workers and union members.
Ms. Solis was born in Los Angeles, California, was educated at Cal Poly Pomona and then earned a master's degree at University of Southern California. She served in the Carter White House in the Office of Hispanic Affairs and later became an analyst with the Office of Management and Budget. She was elected as a member of the California State Assembly in 1992 and after one term one election to the California State Senate before entering the House. In the California legislature, she became well known for authoring bills to prevent domestic violence. She was the first Hispanic woman to ever serve in the state's senate. Ms. Solis has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 2001, representing the 32nd District of California.
CNN is reporting:
"Labor unions Thursday praised President-elect Barack Obama's selection to head the Labor Department, Rep. Hilda Solis. Obama has enjoyed the support of organized labor since the campaign season, when the AFL-CIO, the nation's largest labor organization, endorsed him for president, calling him "a champion for working families."
As a senator, Obama co-sponsored the Employee Free-Choice Act, which was designed to make it easier to create unions in the workplace. Supporters of the plan, including the AFL-CIO, said it would increase the number of union members in the United States and lead to better wages and benefits for workers.
If confirmed, Solis would be the third Hispanic to serve in Obama's Cabinet, along with New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who is Obama's choice for secretary of commerce, and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar, who Obama tapped to be secretary of the interior."

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said the nation's largest organized labor organization was "thrilled" that Solis would be the next labor secretary. "For Rep. Solis, serving as secretary of labor will not just be a job, but the culmination of a lifetime of action serving as a voice for people who work," Stern said. AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said the nation's largest organized labor organization was "thrilled" that Solis would be the next labor secretary. "We're confident that she will return to the labor department one of its core missions -- to defend workers' basic rights in our nation's workplaces," Sweeney said.

"Not so breaking news: Obama selects white-anglo guy Joe Biden as his running mate!" All whites rejoice! It is so important that race and skin color play a role in politics!

Actually Rep. Solis is the third Latino named in Obama´s cabinet.
Obama nominated New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to be his commerce secretary. Since then, Obama has said he would nominate Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.) as his secretary of the interior, and now Solis as labor secretary.

Obama´s entire cabinet is very diverse and has a healthy mix of ethnicities, men and women, just like modern day America. That is good news!! All 100% American!! All very Qualified!!

Women:
Hillary Clinton, Janet Napolitano,
Hilda Solis

Men:
Robert Gates, Tom Dashle, Timothy Geithner, Arnie Duncan, Tom Vilsack, Ray Lahood
Eric Holder
Steven Chu
Bill Richardson, Ken Salazar

In total that is:
Men
6 White males
1 Black male
1 Asian male
2 Hispanic males

Women:
2 White females
1 Hispanic female

Again, what does it matter what ethnicity they are? All that matters is they serve ALL of the American people. A politician can be Black and represent Whites and everyone else and vice versa for example. I liked joker's sarcasm. Very fitting.

This should be called the "labor goon" bill because it has the same purpose of suppressing the free will of workers by destroying the fundamental right of citizens or workers to be able to cast secret ballots. In the old days if you opposed the union leaders, the goons would come around an break your legs, if you were lucky. Now they will put on suits and look over your shoulder as you vote--then they will send in the goons once they have identified those who vote against union representation. I call it involuntary servitude and an obvious payoff to the unions.

I'm surprised anyone would think this unAmerican idea has any redeeming qualities. That's all we need more unions and more strikes to completely destroy our economy.

Is she an illegal alien?

Ultima,
I do not understand why your side is against unions.
It doesnt make sense.
Unions support the workers. They are their advocate.
Without Unions, there are far more opportunities for exploitation and unsafe working conditions. Employers care most about the bottom line, their profit.
Unions have provided tremendous support for workers.

Anon,
Ethnicity makes a big difference.
I have worked in business many years. Throughout, I have championed the Performance Management Model, meaning ALL promoted should be the most Qualified. Everyone has an opportunity to apply, not just favoritism or the good ole boy network.
Before the PM model, upper levels promoted their favorites, usually all good ole boys.
Once the model was in place, the highest performers were promoted. The end result is a multi cultural mix reflecting the workforce.
That is what Obama is doing. He is putting in place a cabinet representing the best of the best which reflects the diversity of the people. No more good ole boys only. Now, a fine multi cultural mix representing the people!

Sorry, I disagree. It is totally unnecessary for any American to have a person of their ethnic group to represent them in politics. That is very devisive and creates an atmosphere of special interest groups. Every politician elected should represent ALL Americans. I don't oppose a mix of ethnicities in politics just not under the pretense that each ethnic group needs representation from their ethnic group or that we should have different ethnic representation in politics just for the sake of diversification. I have never felt I needed to be represented by a white politician or that we should have whites in office just for the sake of showing that whites are an ethnic group in this country either.

Who are the "good ole boys"? We have had a mix of ethnicities in politics for decades now.

Dee said...

Anon,
I disagree.
In the past, Women and some ethnic groups have gone unrepresented in the Senate (for example) for decades. Without advocacy, improper laws may be imposed. In the 20th century, with proper advocacy and representation, Women and Minorities gained the Vote, repealed Jim Crow laws and made significant improvements in Education, Health Care and other areas.
Only the insecure control mongers feel inclusion of women and all ethnicities is devisive.

Isn't that kinda like saying the Mob supports businesses? That they "protect" them?

In both cases they look after their 'clients', as long as their 'clients' keep paying. If they don't pay, the 'protection' goes away.....

The unions had their place, and they contributed greatly.
But they have become just another mob in most cases.

Finally, she says it.....

I don't how you come up your remark about "insecure control mongers" out of me stating that ALL politicians should represent ALL of the American people including women and minorities. That is the reason that no American no matter what ethnic group or gender they are should feel the need to have someone of the same ethnic group or gender represent them. To say so is claiming that politicians only represent a certain segment of our population.

Az,
In answer to your question, No.

Anon,
You are misreading what I said.
I said a good performance management model for any group making decisions for the whole should be a representative of the whole (e.g. ethnicity mix). Remember the founding fathers´rallying cry, "No Taxation without representation!" Same principle.

Anonymous said...

No, I didn't misread what you said. You are implying that every ethnic group/gender needs political representation by same ethnicity/gender. I disagree because no matter what ethnicity or gender a politian is they should represent ALL.

"Employers care most about the bottom line, their profit."

Actually, most care about their shareholders, who in turn care about profits.....

Maybe it's time to do what I've suggested for the last 10 years or so:
Eliminate the stock market.....

Dee said...

Az,
How could the stockmarket be eliminated? Would each shareholder get a check and then the company just owns itself?

I guess I should be rooting for the white women to represent me, since I'm a white woman. But, I care more about their positions on issues of importance to me. As an example, just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I believe in the Freedom of Choice Act and I will fight against any man, woman, any color, who supports it.

What does Dee think of Latino politicians who don't support the same illegal immigration policies she does? Are they traitors to their race/color? Makes no sense to me.

Anon,
Here is what you are missing.
In an PM model, the 1st requirement is: Qualified.
You dont select or vote for anyone that is not qualified.

When voting, I also look for someone who supports my views. No politician supports 100% of their constituents views. Therefore, each voter should study the candidates and vote for the ones that support most of their views.

Also, most PROs are not like your side. PRO CIRs Love America and are Very Patriotic. AND, we also understand there may be people of any ethnicity that do not support all of our views. HOWEVER, we are not quick to call anyone who disagrees with us "Traitors" as Your Side does!

Anonymous said...

So now you are claiming that the anti side is not patriotic and doesn't love this country? Following the laws of this country and respecting it's border is not patriotic nor loving? Surely you jest.

Anonymous said...

Dee, that's simply a lie. I had just said I would fight against any gender or color on the basis of a viewpoint.

Don't lie to me. I'm smarter than that.

Well, first, is that a bad thing?

Second, no. You would just eliminate a public forum designed to "trade" small bits of companies. Something so trivial has become the pseudo-backbone of the 'economy'.
The stock market has become a casino where people expect government intervention/handouts when they lose....
