Immigration, Outsourced
Published: April 9, 2008
Not content to botch immigration policy all by itself, Congress has handed large parts of the job to others to mishandle. It gave the homeland security czar the czarist powers to overturn any law and ignore any court to seal the border. Now Michael Chertoff is clear-cutting a forest of regulations to wall out Mexico by the end of the year. And through the program known as 287(g), his agency is parceling out duties to a growing number of local police and sheriff’s departments, raising an army of junior deputies in the war on illegal immigrants. To see how unhinged things have become, it pays to zero in on the squalid doings in Maricopa County, Ariz. It is home to Phoenix, the country’s fifth-largest city, and the largest 287(g) program anywhere. It is run by the county sheriff, Joe Arpaio, who has built a national reputation for toughness through years of cruelty to prison inmates and an insatiable appetite for publicity. Where most departments have only handfuls of officers trained to enforce federal immigration laws, Sheriff Joe, as he is known, has 160. Their efforts are supplemented by what the sheriff says, without apology, is a 3,000-member “posse.” For months now, Sheriff Joe has been sending squads of officers through Latino neighborhoods, pulling cars over for broken taillights or turn-signal violations, checking drivers’ and passengers’ papers and arresting illegal immigrants by the dozen.
Because he sends out press releases beforehand, the sweeps are accompanied by TV crews and protesters — deport-’em-all hard-liners facing off against immigrant advocates. Being Arizona, many of those shouting and jeering are also packing guns. Sheriff Joe, seemingly addicted to the buzz, has been filmed marching down the street shaking hands with adoring Minutemen.
If this doesn’t look to you like a carefully regulated, federally supervised effort to catch dangerous criminals, that’s because it isn’t. It is a series of stunts focused mostly on day laborers, as Sheriff Joe bulldozes his way toward re-election.
The sheriff says he is keeping the peace, but it seems as if he is doing just the opposite — a useless, reckless churning of fear and unrest. Mayor Phil Gordon of Phoenix has denounced him, saying the raids are interfering with undercover city police officers and federal agents. The mayor of Guadalupe implored him to leave her community alone. State and county officials have pointed out that Sheriff Joe has ignored tens of thousands of outstanding criminal warrants while chasing day laborers and headlines. They say he has grossly violated the terms of his 287(g) agreement — which calls for federal oversight of local police — and have called on Washington to rein him in. “Do you think I’m going to report to the federal government?” he said. “I don’t report to them. If they don’t like the contract, they can close it up. That’s all.”
“By the way,” he said, “we do have a 3,000-person posse — and about 500 have guns. They have their own airplanes, jeeps, motorcycles, everything. They can only operate under the sheriff. I swear ’em in. I can put up 30 airplanes tomorrow if I wanted.”
The federal government so far seems unconcerned. “He has stayed within the bounds of the agreement,” Matthew Allen, special agent in charge of immigration and customs enforcement in Arizona, told The Arizona Republic. Jim Pendergraph, an I.C.E. official from Washington, told the paper that after driving to Guadalupe to watch Sheriff Joe in action: “I saw nothing that gave me heartburn.”
It’s past time for Congress to hold hearings on these agreements, starting with a subpoena for Sheriff Joe.

This is nothing more than an opinion piece.

This kind of sums it up, doesn't it!! Police set up "check points" all the time to verify Insurance, children in car seats, license, seat belts, safety concerns. In the other posts, I showed that in one day 30 outstanding warrants were cleared + 18 other warrants at the same time, thats 48 warrants in one day cleared by Arpaio's check points. and yet, he still gets re-elected, go figure.
No matter how many phoney, inflammatory articles that you post about the Sheriff and Homeland Security dee, the illegals are going home and we are going to secure our borders. The next thing they need to do is go after the seditionists in this country and lock them up for treason. Hope you like prison food, lol.
Pat,
This is in the New York Times.
Phony newspapers are the anti rags by the extremist sites.
Liquid,
This is the lead editorial by the New York Times Ed. staff.
Now that we have the mainstream media´s attention, perhaps something will be done.
I want to see McCain respond. I want to see the Dems in Congress to push for this review. I want the Mayors to provide their feedback. I want them to call on the cartoon sheriff to put on his display.
We the People want the Racial Profiling to Stop!!
You the Sympathizer people want the so called racial profiling stopped. Your article is an OPINION piece, look to the top of the page, right in the middle, "OPINION". However, even they answer there own question with, "The federal government so far seems unconcerned. “He has stayed within the bounds of the agreement,” Matthew Allen, special agent in charge of immigration and customs enforcement in Arizona, told The Arizona Republic. Liquid,
You prove my point. ICE allows the racial profiling, allows Arpaio to run amok and all this heinous behavior does NOT give the ICE official Heartburn. That is the gauge for outrageous behavior. I wonder if he would have "heartburn" if he visited the Japanese Internment Camps or the camps in Nazi Germany.
The wild eyed heinous sheriff himself says, "“Do you think I’m going to report to the federal government?” he said. “I don’t report to them. If they don’t like the contract, they can close it up. That’s all.”

ARPAIO IS OUT OF CONTROL!!
HE MUST BE STOPPED!!
SQUAWK, SQUAWK, SQUAWK, SQUAWK, SQUAWK!
You know, It's sad when ppl get elected sheriff when you spend most of your time arresting ppl that having killed anyone, raped anyone, robbed anyone, but arrest them based want what their looks. You ANTI's praise this QUACK as if he deserves the metal of honor, "Oh, the illeeeeeegals are going home!!"
How do you know whether or not some of these illegals have committed heinous crimes? You don't! If you think none do then you are crazy.
It matters not anyway. Crimes are crimes. It is a crime to be in this country illegally and that is what they are being arrested for. Many have stolen I.D's and SS numbers but I guess how this negatively affects Americans is of no importance to you? They aren't being arrested for their looks, they are being arrested for all of the above.
Next, the traitors to our country need to be arrested IMO.
Here is the point Dee, "“He has stayed within the bounds of the agreement,” Matthew Allen, special agent in charge of immigration and customs enforcement in Arizona, told The Arizona Republic."
Sorry that you do not like the LAWS, anon and Dee, but until you either get them changed or Arpaio out of office, you, just like everybody else, must abide by them. Still it is only your rants of racial profiling with no documented proof, hearsay is all you have.
God, I love karma!
Mexico Complains Of Too Many Repatriated Mexicans

Judicial Watch Blog
"The U.S. border state leading the battle against illegal immigration with unprecedented tough laws has received complaints from Mexico’s government that too many Mexicans have been repatriated and the country is overwhelmed with demands for housing, jobs and schools.
Fed up with the devastating effect of illegal immigration, Arizona has enacted the nation’s toughest laws to curb the problem and evidently its working. State legislators have passed laws barring illegal immigrants from receiving government services, posting bail for serious crimes and winning punitive damages in lawsuits. This year a new law makes it illegal for businesses to hire undocumented workers and those that do can be shut down.
The state legislator who sponsored the work bill, Representative Russell Pearce, says the law’s undeniably positive effects include smaller class sizes, shorter emergency room waits and an overall huge savings to taxpayers. The Republican congressman drafted the bill because studies revealed that illegal immigration cost Arizona taxpayers over $2 billion annually, not including the toll of crime and destruction.
It turns out that enough illegal immigrants have either fled the U.S. or been deported that officials in the Mexican state of Sonora, which shares an extensive border with Arizona, have complained that too many of their fellow countrymen have returned. They miss the remittances sent from the U.S. as well as smaller class sizes in local schools.
Mexican government officials knew Arizona’s tough employment verification law would become their worst nightmare, which explains why they tried blocking it. Earlier this year a delegation of nine legislators from Sonora toured Tucson and held a news conference to say that their beloved state cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools resulting from illegal Mexican workers returning home.
One baffled Mexican legislator, Leticia Amparano Gamez, asked in Spanish “how can they pass a law like this?” She went on to explain that Mexico is not prepared for the “tremendous problems” it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and sending money to their families return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs. Another member of the Mexican delegation, Representative Florencio Diaz Armenta, asked “what do we do with the repatriated?”

I left a post on a previous blog about the arrests in my county of WHITE PEOPLE for things like fishing without a license. I fail to see how what this guy is doing is any different. Please explain this to me in terms I can understand..in terms comparing what he does to "brown" people vs what other sheriff's do to "white people". Also, from what I read about this small town of 5,000 they have an out-of-control crime problem. If that happened in my town of about the same size, I would certainly hope we had a Sheriff Joe around.
Liquid,
As you have proven when you go against overzealous, out of control, power hungry cops, sometimes they are wrong. As is Arpaio. As the Arizona Mayors have shared with us.
Dianne,
As Liquid has noted and how many of us have experienced, there are power hungry out of control cops. First, let me say, for the most part, our police are very good people who do the right thing. However, in given circumstances, some are corrupt and some are out of control. Liquid shared one experience. You share others.
Over the top is what is happening each and every time with Arpaio.
What is clear is, he has an agenda. HE hungers for power. HE hungers for attention. HE is using illegal immigration and those here as a tool to enable him to achieve his goals.
This is clear!
The cop that pulled me over did so for a reason, he just didn't like it when I "told Him" to get out his tape measure, basically I was telling him how to do his job. He could have then handles the situation a little better, he just chose incorrectly to make my day a loss by having to go to court.
Sheriff Joe's agenda is to rid his area of illegal aliens, period! Everytime someone says anything negative about illegal aliens or does something to eliminate them, you claim they are on a power trip or looking for ratings, dee. Where is your proof of that, dee? Is it really that hard for you to believe that most Americans are loyal, law abiding citizens instead of ethnocentric traitors like your side is?
HHHAAAA!!! The utter BS spewing from that last comment, you ANTI's really do live in a dream world, wake up and smell REALLITY, your side is the WRONG side, therefore will never get what you want, which is this country turning into one big MAYBERRY
anon, no we aren't on the wrong side. We are on the side of our laws. How can that be on the wrong side?
No, we aren't looking to have an all White country. We just want to retain our majority and heritage along with our culture and language in this country just like Mexicans in Mexico want the same for their country. We certainly don't want to lose this country's identity and heritage thru a massive illegal invasion. There is nothing natural about that nor does it equate to racism on the part of the majority in this country. Guess who the real racists are?
