Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who is a Republican and was a prominent member of former President George W. Bush's Cabinet, said he is enjoying working for President Obama. Gates praised Obama’s approach to decision-making as the nation's commander-in-chief. "He is very analytical. He is very deliberate about the way he goes through things. He wants to understand everything. He delves very deeply into these issues." (What a change from Bush)As I was reading this report this morning, my mind zipped back to Bush/Cheney getting us involved in the wrongful war in Iraq. All you have to do is look at a map of the Middle East to understand how ridiculous it was to get involved in this war. After 9/11, the world understood Bin Laden/Al Qaeda were the perpetrators. The US government concluded that Osama bin Laden was present during the Battle of Tora Bora, Afghanistan in late 2001, and according to civilian and military officials with first-hand knowledge, failure by the US to commit US ground troops to hunt him led to his escape and was the gravest failure by the US in the war against al Qaeda. Bin Laden began the battle of Tora Bora inside the cave complex along Afghanistan's mountainous eastern border. He somehow managed to escape. Today, Intelligence Reports indicate he escaped to Chitral, Pakistan. Anyone who studies a map of the middle east knows and understands the closeness in proximity of these areas. He escaped to a nearby region. Tora Bora, Afghanistan and Chitral, Pakistan are on the Eastern side of their countries, close to China. Iraq is located on the opposite side of Iran.
It made no sense to go to Iraq. There were no weapons of mass destruction. Many of Bush's advisers advised against going there, including Richard Clark. Yet, we still are there. If anyone can get us, perhaps Obama can.
Defense Secretary Gates has worked with both men. I'd say his feedback is a very good sign!

A black woman was hustled out of the facility by the cops. The woman was punished because of the vile action of a White Right Winger.

The African-American woman at the center of this, Maxine Johnson, showed up late at the town hall meeting. She arrived with company and sat down in the auditorium. The Rosa Parks sign was rolled up and placed on a nearby seat.
Was the Parks' poster offensive? Did it come close to the inflammatory signs of the right - you know Obama-as-Hitler etc? Not even close. The poster showed Rosa Parks along with the caption "First Lady of Civil Rights."
Elie Gardner, a photojournalist with the St Louis Post-Dispatch, is seen on video asking about the Parks poster. As this interchange is underway, a man described in some reports as a 'teabagger' - ID'd as James Winfrey of Cedar Hills, MO - crossed the aisle, grabbed Ms Johnson's sign in an aggressive manner. He then proceeded to rip it before flinging it to the floor.
This uncalled for act of vandalism drew the attention of others present in the hall. The cops appeared and ironically enough it was Ms Johnson who was hustled out of the building to the sound of cheers and applause.
Why did the cops pick on a black woman who just had her property unlawfully seized and trashed? James Winfrey had no right to grab the sign, let alone destroy it.
Moreover since signs - reportedly against the rules - were at the center of the altercation, how come cops are seen on the video doing nothing to stop white members of the audience who were waving yellow "Don't Tread On Me" signs- the graphic with the coiled snake?
Some pundits have asked what a Rosa Parks poster has to do with health reform anyway. The answer is... more than you might think. The town hall meetings have been used as a convenient platform for haters and fear-mongers to stage deeply partisan attacks against the Obama administration under cover as 'concerned citizens.'
Representative James Clyburn (D-S.C.) has compared some town hall free-for-alls with "horrid anti-civil rights demonstrations." Clyburn knows whereof he speaks. He was a civil rights leader who experienced the struggle first hand.

Maxine Johnson - the woman who had her Rosa PArks poster snatched by a crazy guy at a Sen. Claire McCaskill town hall meeting - tells CNN why she is the victim of racial profiling in the incident. "I was insulted that [the security guards] were all on me, and this guy basically walked out the door," said Johnson, who claims that other participants had signs with the N-word on them. "It was clearly racial," she says. "If I were a white person, this would not have happened."

Closeness = proximity
The differences are oil and the proximity of Iraq to more moderate countries like the Iran (under the Shah), Jordan, and Israel. Perhaps it looked like an opportunity to send a message regarding UN resolutions --one that needs to be re-sent to Iran since it seems to be ignoring the UN. The final word on Iraq is not yet in. If it succeeds in achieving some form of democratic government, Bush will be largely vindicated.
Gates seems like a pretty level-headed gent but I can't imagine anyone who is in the cabinet and who plans to continue in that capacity going on national TV and saying anything nasty about his boss. He would have to resign before he would do anything like that.
I took note that he seems to be leaning toward more troops for Afghanistan but couldn't really say that on TV. Instead he waffled on it and talked about yet another strategy review. I thought when McCrystal and Petraeus were given the job the strategy was already established. In fact, the Petraeus appointment seemed to affirm that the plan and the strategy was to use the Iraq blueprint -- a testamony to Obama's acceptance that something positive had been achieved there.
