With violence spilling over the Mexican border into the U.S., President Calderon should have little trouble securing support for his battle against drugs when he meets with President Obama.
The U.S. leads the World in illegal drug use and gangs/cartels across the globe are fighting to be the primary drug provider. In fact, last month, the U.S. Justice Department called Mexican cartels the biggest organized crime threat to the United States, saying they are increasingly pairing up with the Italian Mafia and other gangs to control distribution in American cities.
Calderon, who has been praised by U.S. officials for deploying troops to fight cartels and capturing top drug kingpins, already won a multimillion-dollar anti-drug aid package from Washington last year. Obama supports that plan, known as the Merida Initiative, and promises to take up another cause that Calderon champions: stopping the smuggling of guns from the U.S. to Mexico, which the Washington-based Brookings Institute says has reached a volume of 2,000 weapons a day. Obama has said that "southbound" strategy will complement the "northbound" crackdown on drug trafficking.
Calderon is also expected to discuss making immigration reform a top priority. While it is doubtful the Obama administration will view Comprehensive Immigration Reform as a top priority this year due to Economic and War priorities, Calderon said he will press for better conditions for Mexicans in the United States, based on respect for their rights and may express concerns over stepped-up migrant raids. In other words, the end to Hate Crimes Against Latinos and the end of ICE Raid/Detention Center Abuses.
I will monitor the outcome of these meetings and report the results later this week.

Calderon wants better conditions for Mexicans in the U.S.? How about better conditions for Mexicans in Mexico? As far as I know there are no bad conditions for Mexican-Americans in the U.S. anyway. He has no right to ask Obama to stop enforcement of our immigration laws eitehr. When Calderon stops enforcement of immigration laws in his own country then we can talk.
Please stick to topic, Anon.
Myriad reports indicate the US is the number 1 abuser of illegal drugs in the world. The drug cartels around the world are falling all over themselves to be the number 1 provider. Now Mexico, Italian, Russian and Chinese Cartels are partnering to be the number 1 prover.
Do you begin to understand that if we did not ask them to come, they would NOT come? Do you get that?
Think of Marketing 101.
Supply and Demand.
Without the Demand, there would be NO SUPPLY!!
Additionally, this has NOTHING to do with Immigration. The Drug Czars around the world do not want to live here. They merely want to be the providers.
Try to UNDERSTAND the Topic!!
Back top topic: President Obama is meeting with Mexico President Felipe Calderon tomorrow, Jan. 12, 2009. Their lead topic of discussion: War on Drugs in Border Cities.
Since the US leads the globe in illegal drug use, the international drug cartels are falling all over themselves to be our suppliers.
It is good the US is partnering with Mexico to defeat the drug cartels!
Additionally, no one expects to see the passage of CIR this year on the agenda but Calderon said he will press for better conditions for Mexicans in the United States, based on respect for their rights and may express concerns over stepped-up migrant raids. The way I interpret this is, he is asking for the end to Hate Crimes Against Latinos and the end of ICE Raid/Detention Center Abuses. I agree on both.
Agree with you Dee. In addition, discussions are to be held on the massive influx of weapons from the US into Mexico, usually the result of True American Patriots, excercising their 2nd Amendment Rights and making a buck or two in the process.
Without the US demand for drugs, the cartels would look elsewhere.
Without illegal US arms flooding the country, the so called border wars would cease!
PCorn,
You are right "the smuggling of guns from the U.S. to Mexico, which the Washington-based Brookings Institute says has reached a volume of 2,000 weapons a day" is one of the reasons the cartels are so powerful.
The flow of weapons from the US to Mexico needs to stop.
Some Obama failures are already showing up before he takes office. What will it be like after he is in office? Is he busy selling us out to Calderon?
President's FIRST priority is to keep Americans safe. He needs to secure the borders (note the "s"). He needs to be ready to send military to the border if necessary. I believe that's why he chose Napolitano. She knows how to do this.
A top priority for President Obama is the War on Drugs! Why are we the #1 USER of illegal drugs in the world? Stop the Demand, end the need for the supply!
Additionally, there would not be so much violence IF we didn't supply so many weapons! That should stop immediately!
The arrogance of this Mexican pres defies comprehension. He has the same entitlement attitude as the Mexicans in our country...YOU owe US...I'm sick of it.
Gosh, I wish Calderon would push for better conditions for Mexicans in MEXICO as well as respect for their rights there!
If he did that, they wouldn't need to come here.
If Jordan and the one who doesn't have the cojones to use his real name would pull their heads out of their asses, they would realize that Felipe Calderon, following on the heels of Vicente Fox's administration is doing extraordinary things to weed out corruption and better the lives of his citizens.
But 75 years of one party rule and all the problems that has caused cannot be erased overnight, nor in one 6 year Presidential term.
In the myopic scope of some, they refuse to acknowledge this and make really stupid and uninformed comments about something they know nothing about!
Ni modo!
