The Obama's Celebrate "Fiesta Latina" at the White House

The White House hosted “Fiesta Latina” last night, and were joined by Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Eva Longoria Parker, George Lopez, and Jimmy Smits, among many others. As part of their ongoing series of parties and events at the White House, the Obamas hosted a Latin music celebration (or, "Fiesta Latina") on Tuesday night. The performers included Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony, Jose Feliciano, Los Lobos, the New York bachata band Aventura, the Mexican singer Thalia, among others.

Obama said a few words to the audience, then proceeded to bring the whole family up for some impromptu salsa.

How come we don't have any Mexican Americans at these parties. We are 70% of so called Hispanics or Latinos and yet Cubans and Puerto Ricans who only represent 6% and 3% respectively always have to represent the whole group. Why didn't they also have a little mariachi music if Obama really wants to court all the Hispanics.

MexAm,
I'm sure many were there. Just to name a few: Jessica Alba, Lynda Carter (Wonderwoman), Salma Hayek (my favorite!), Eva Longoria (she was on stage), Mario Lopez, George Lopez (on stage), Cheech Marin (my other favorite), Edward James Olmos (was there).
More Actors than Singers.

My all time favorite actor passed away: Anthony Quinn (he looked like my Dad)

ART is expression, culture, joy of being alive, or a balsam against the tribulations and difficulties.

It is perfectly natural that some ethnic group, large or small, like the Irish Americans or the Russian Americans, celebrate an Irish or Russian Week, and give an award to a storyteller of the same origin, or a painter that paints Leprechauns, or Russian Peasant Witches, or the American Landscape or any Americana Vision or Beauty.

Great Obama and Michelle Epiphanies, Moments of Truth.

Cameramen and Photographers are inspired by a strong desire to capture a "Moment of Truth", a diaphanous snapshot of Reality, for Celebrities or for Politicians.

Two days ago we had such a Wonderful and Magical Moment of Reality and Truth, when little black boy Therence Scott asked the President of the United States :

"Why People hate you ?"

Mr Obama gave the answer of a Great Statesman. He is a superb orator and actor. His enemies in the Media are the poorest exaggerated histrionics and clowns compared to him.

When Michelle said that she was first proud of America, that was another beautiful moment of Truth.

Of course Michelle has always loved her land and has always being proud of America.

But the unconscious commited treason against Michelle. She was expresssing the angst and pain of being Black in America.

And for me that was a beautiful moment of ART and TRUTH, taken by the Cameras, Videos, Photos, etc ...

The racist mad dogs amplified that Michelle Moment of Beauty with their stupid, idiotic, stultifying rants.

No, Vicente. What Michelle Obama said after her husband was elected was that it was the first time in her life that she felt proud to be an American. I think it pretty sad that she had never felt proud to be an American before regardless of being black in America. This isn't 1950 Selma, Alabama anymore. Far from it. Was life in America that pitifull for her as a well educated woman?

Dee said...

JS,
You are taking her comments out of context. What she said was, ""for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."

What she was referencing was saying is she’s really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who’ve never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change.

Leave it the the right wingers to twist and spin her words. This was a very positive message.

Michelle Obama always loved her land America, her language English, her Community, Friends, Neighborhood.

What she tried to express was that for the First Time she saw a Big Change in allowing a "Black" man to be a viable candidate for the Presidency.

It is impossible for us to enter in the shoes of a "Black" Woman in an Ivy League University in those times or in our times.

But I have sen this with my own eyes : A black youngster ( female or male ) is shunned by many people in high school or college.

Nothing like our own eyes, as witnesses or testimony of how Society works.

How about posting a link to Michelle Obama's exact words on this then? I had never read anywhere at the time that this happened that what you quoted is what she actually said. It sounds to me like you are trying to interpret her words to be something other than what she actually said. Prove me wrong then by posting the link.

Dee said...

JS,
Let me help you with something. When I put quotes on something, this is a direct quote.
All YOU have to do is take the direct quote and google it.

Simple.

JS said...

Actually I did just that and what I found is that what you quoted her as saying was her explanation "later" for her first words because many Americans were put off by her first remarks (of which I quoted accurately and didnt take out of context). I think perhaps she just should have worded her first words more like her explanation of them at that later date, as her first words were troubling to many Americans.

Dee said...

JS,
I agree that she could have worded her intent better the first time.

Can you imagine being held to that level of scrutiny every minute of the day, every day?

And there are those who love to twist and turn the meaning of words.

I like Michelle Obama. She is smart and tough and a very good wife and mother. I am proud she is our First Lady of the USA! I think she has the best intentions at heart.

JS said...

If you had admitted that what you quoted was her explanation later of her first words rather than what she had said initially it would have made it a lot clearer, wouldn't it? I was telling the truth in the first place and would have liked that to have been acknowledged.

Dee said...

I still leave it to her intent which was What she said was, "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."

What she was referencing was saying is she’s really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who’ve never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change.

JS said...

That change she spoke about could also have meant that she was proud that we had finally elected a black president but she knew better than to actually say that because that would have brought the subject of race into the issue.

There have been other times in history when Americans were so PO'd at our current administration that there were more than the normal votes cast during that election year.
